Is Squarepusher Attempting To Go "Mainstream"?

Recommended Posts

Well?

Personally, I don't think so, but the amount of hype WARP is putting behind this, it's almost as if they're wishing SP will go "mainstream" like their other more recent signings, to attract a wider audience. Hopefully not, as I see this whole project as something Tom just wanted to do in the lines of his musical career.

In what way are WARP putting any particular hype behind this release compared to his earlier outings? Is it the video? I feel like i am missing something here.

yes

I agree that Warp may have some ideas about the future Squarepusher. Myself I can't see him bursting out onto the mainstream circuit. Hopefully not anyway.

Just heard one of his Shobaleader tracks on DT podcast. Can't say it went near impressing me but I lay in wait for the full release.

Hope hope hope!

:doge: Jet fuel can't melt dank memes :doge:

I think this Shobaleader thing is just what he feels like doing at the moment to keep himself from going plastic.

Tom is at an age where he's done the rebel thing. By doing this he can expose himself to a wider audience, a new audience. This can help him out financially and still let him perform in a way that he enjoys. There is no way he has made the decision on the basis of the warp roster. It would of ultimately been his decision.

Look at the likes rusko, skream, benga for example. I'm not trying to compare them to squarepusher or put them in the same class, but they have got in there, sold their souls so they can reap the rewards and continue doing what they love. Who wouldn't?

I don't think Tom is "attempting" at anything besides having a good time.

This.

And then there's the simple fact Shobaleader is just one of over 9000 ideas regularly in his head. Listening to this man's discography proves he's willing to try everything.

i do think he's attempting to go mainstream, yes.

lol profound argument, JAS a mainstream album? Is this new one? Oh wait we haven't heard the whole thing... hrmmm

it's not catchy enough to go mainstream, if it was then your theory would make more sense. maybe WArp really believes in him, after all they did release 'solo electric bass'

it doesn't need to be catchy. i love squarepusher, believe me. i don't care if he wants to go "mainstream." if its good i'll listen to it

i do think it's obvious that he's at least going to reach a wider crowd with this. come on, look at that daft punk type stuff. many of the (big) electronic acts these days have some visual thing going on with the helments and lights and stuff.

just a souvenir was raw as hell. i do think however that ever since "hello meow" he's been slowly edging towards a larger audience. maybe i'm wrong

"red hot car."

that said, hes created some of my favorite albums. even just a souvenir was pretty good...

i will wait to hear this one to comment further. the full song that was released was good and bad, sometimes really very disappointing. i haven't enjoyed it much

Is it possible that this new stuff is a way of going back a few decades? Like afx has done with analords. Making contemporary electronics, but with a old-fashioned atmosphere to it.

www.petergaber.com is where I keep my paintings. I used to have a kinky tumblr, but it exploded.

Can you queers just fuck off out of the SQ forum if all you're going to do is take shots at him. Serious amount of haters.

Can people please wait until they hear the album before making such broad judgements.

i've been too busy to follow anything since numbers lucent so i am just talking out of my ass, but:

i remember him saying his tracks started off as computer drum tracks and him playing bass guitar or whatever, and live instrumentation has always been a big thing with him. now, he is well-known and he can get a bunch of good musicians to show up and do things instead of having a computer do it, play all the parts to himself on an 8track. seems like a logical thing to try, because it might be cool. i seriously doubt he woke up one sunny tuesday and decided to "go mainstream".
