WHAT? pasadena aint the hood man! that's one of the nicest beautiful places in southern california! i never knew he was the one that sang the song... i always thought he had a guest singing on it.

Apparently, the guest singer's hood pass wasn't intact enough to be included in the edit. That's sad they only kept Dâm-Funk's singing part...

But since you mention possibly going back to the funk and jazzy beats era, you might be interested in this. I just happened to download it today. It's a 2-track compilation a bit over 40 minutes long. The second track is screwed though, so I'll actually have to buy it one of these days. It's worth checking out at least the first track though.
