anyone else download compulsively?

I'm always amazed when someone says they listen to the same album all day, or have played it 10 times in a week. I might listen to something 3 times in a week at most, if I'm trying to get familiar with it. If I'm already well familiar with it, then yeah it's not likely I'll play it more than once or twice in a month.

When I used to drive it was easier just to leave one CD in the deck, because the plays would be interrupted when you were out doing things or sitting at home, possibly even listening to other things. Then you'd get back in the car and jam out. But at home and at work, I just could not listen to the same album over and over that much, I need variety.

I listen to newly acquired albums that I really like incessantly, until I understand and know every little detail, then I won't listen again for months, or years.

this is what i do as well, i have been listening to nothing but the new former ghosts LP all day today and i'll probably continue to listen to it for most of the night then not listen to it again for quite a while. i think i listened to owen pallett's "heartland" like 16 times over about 3 days and i haven't listened to it since then. there are a few artists i come back to constantly (mainly john maus and kate bush) but yeah beyond that i just go apeshit over new albums.

Only noobs who are still impressed by the featured artists do that!

now that i got back to what.cd, i download like 6 or 7 torrents per week. sometimes more, sometimes less. LPs and EPs, mostly fresh releases.

positive side:

-high quality is guaranteed;

-as i am sharing too, and need to keep healthy ratio, it doesn't feel like warez (aka stealing) that much;

negative side:

-the second positive aspect is nothing but psychological and fooling.

I do.. The music i download I usually get to listen to at least once, but not always. Movies are even worse, I haven't seen half the movies I've downloaded.. probably even less.

It's sad, i know, but it's just my thing. Don't know why and it has no practical use other than to waste time.

Of course, when some of them end up as favorites I do listen to them more than once, but not as much I wish to, because there is always something new pushing it's way into my player.

Once, I lost my internet connection for over 2 weeks, and I had a great time listening to lots of stuff I'd got but never heard before.. I still dream of taking my HDD out to a cabin and just enjoy music for a while.

Some of you must be independently wealthy! I realize digital downloads are cheaper than CDs, but still I can only afford a couple every week or two.

downloading can have multiple interpretations and meanings @round the webs

by downloading music illegally you force your favorite band to tour more and therefore increasing the chance they might come closer to your place of living

Lol. But you also force them to bring just a laptop instead of a bunch of cool gear for a real live PA.

Guilty tho. But I justify it by having gone into serious debt buying CDs in the 90s and early 00s.

this is my admittedly terrible justification as well. both of them, lol.

I also force my brain to believe that is fair reasoning.

not so much, but sometimes with music, if i find the set list to a set i like i'll just get all the tracks (recently with some of the wbmx sets). how ever i do compulsively save images (i imagine lots and lots of people do this), mostly design related and lots of high res images of maps etc, high-res on 4-chan can be absolutely fantastic but mostly shite.

I have probably a good thousand or so tracks that I haven't listened to yet, from downloading discographies of artists. I don't like to listen to the same albums for very long, so I'm constantly switching up, and I'm working my way through the list slowly but surely.

As to non-music, not so much. I have a folder full of roughly 2.5 GB of funny(ish) pictures I've discovered on the interwebs, but that's it.

i can get very compulsive. its not a good thing, i don't think it's a bad thing either. i've heard lots of different worlds of sound from obsessively scouring blogs and reading reviews, connecting one band to another, researching, etc.

it's good because you're exposed to more so you can find more of the "gems," but it also shows you a lot of music is not to your liking, or at least you only listen to it once, perhaps enjoy it, perhaps not, and then it sits on your hard drive eternally, never to be opened again. thats what happens to 90% of the super random, underground music that i find on my compulsive downloading sprees.

oh yes, an important point:

I have no problem listening to everything I download. The real problem is never really being in the mood to watch the scores of films I've amassed.

oh yes, the accumulation of movies on hard drive is a real problem in our new digital cool world.

I don't download films. First of all, I rarely want to watch the same movie more than once, unless it's years later. Second, I like to watch movies on my TV, not my computer screen, and I'm not equipped to connect my PC to my TV.

Films are much much better on TV. Rarely ever watch movies on my screen if not a bad movie I just want to skip through just have "seen". :P
