gap has redone its logo to much dismay. tycho is having a little contest over at his site.

I think the speckled background is a bit unnecessary though and the font may be a little too masculine heavy for their typical demographic. Look at me pretending to know about design

i like the one thats just the old gap logo but with din 1541 engschrift instead of whatever bollocks serif font they used.

We've been discussing this in the office the last few days...the new logo is horrid. And it's really just that stupid little gradient box. It makes the brand look much older than the previous logo, definitely a step backwards.

I'm curious if they'll end up selecting something else with all the suggestions floating around.

Not to mention, the gradient will reproduce poorly on faxes, one-colour prints (like their clothing tags) and the like. A good logo is effective and looks the same in black and white as it does in full living colour.

Exactly...the dark blue box behind the black text will all just blend together.

And they're basically trying to get free work now. Due to all the backlash, they've openly welcomed suggestions from designers, and I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to change it for something better. Doesn't mean they won't offer to pay for it, but they're still getting free comps from all over the place. Yeah free publicity and all that for those that submit great logos, but that's beside the point.

Something makes me think gap might care more about customer reaction to the aesthetics of their public icon than if the thing shows up in a fax. I'm pretty sure any graphic designer could make it safe for b&w printing within 10 seconds.

this is true but beside the point. the logo is unsuccessful by every measure of a good logo mark. i blame the client more than the agency and there isnt a doubt in my mind the agency behind this new what the backlash was going to be.
