actually just realized the other day - or at least thought seriously about - why i got so much into the idm acts as b12, the black dog, plaid, boc and even aphex,

it is the melody. it's what i look for in music, and the most precious element for me.

well, if structure was completely gone...i'm not sure how much i could really enjoy. it's a tough choice.

is ambient music structure-less?

i said timbre btw. i just like all the different "temperatures" of the sound spectrum

Without structure, I picture songs being nothing but "BEGIN MELODY/RHYTHM ONE. END MELODY/RHYTHM ONE. BEGIN MELODY/RHYTHM TWO..." and so on.

It's harmony

Melodies either imply harmonies or function within or against a harmonic backdrop.

Timbre is also a part of harmony as has been discovered by spectral composers, the quality of a sound is dictated by the presence/absence/amplitude of certain partials. Thus a xylophone and a piano striking the exact same pitch will be different.

Rhythm... ok that's different, less important imo but that's just personal taste.

I like timbre the most.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.
