Autechre class

Dear All,

I'm currently teaching a semester-long course on Autechre at the University of Buffalo in Buffalo, NY. The class is for non-music majors, and so far it's been going quite well. It's the first time I've taught this class, and I may have an opportunity to teach it again in the spring. I wanted to know your thoughts and ideas about potential changes I should make as far as content. Here's a link to the current syllabus:

Seeing as this is a forum of experts on this subject, your comments, feedback, and ideas are very valuable to me and greatly appreciated!

Jacob

Wait til TheSun hears about this!

Seriously though, I would love to even simply audit your course if I might have the chance sometime.

this is pretty strange. no one within a 10mile radius has heard of autechre wherever i've gone.

if you want my help, i don't know wtf i can do other than discuss ae at great length, their career progression, live shows, aesthetic of their music, why ae music is the way it is, whatever.

edit-

but yeah send me a message if you want and we can meet up in teh real worlds if you want. my place is near buffstate

I enjoy the fragility of the rolling lol tbh. The broken lol is like our own mortality staring us in the face, reminding us to enjoy that sunset.

Your syllabus is a veritable new member title inspiration, thanks!

Guys these are still up for grabs :cisfor:

spectacle, physical gesture/embodiment, and sound agency

Who are Autechre, and why study them?

Guest cult fiction

You covered every topic I could think of that was important... awesome! I wish I could have taken this instead of my god-awful required art/music/theatre appreciation class where attendance was mandatory and we would literally spend 30 minutes of the class having to "meditate" with our heads down because the grad student had no lecture planned that week.

You should try to get in contact with sean or rob and see if they will do a guest lecture or at least answer some questions.

I thought that this would be a good thing to do as well. The university unfortunately doesn't have the money to bring them here, but maybe even a Skype session with the students could be helpful. I can't seem to find any contact info for Sean and Rob, and their US booking agency never responded. Do any of you all have experience contacting them personally?

maybe, ask warp about it. regarding the generative thing (ep7/confield era) have you check the max/msp patch that was "available" for a while ?

This is so awesome, but I think it might be a little bit of a bad idea, just because I don't think you should consider ONLY Autechre for experimental music. I mean they are amazing, like super super amazing. but It might be a better idea to just parallel Autechre's career and the changes thorough the experimental music scene in the 20 some years they've been around...

I suggest you read this as well

Woah that's pretty awesome. One minor criticism (and it is minor) - the required reading on the first week is their Wikipedia entry which seems a little lazy. Plus ol' wiki isn't known for its reliability either - for instance the section:

"Autechre sometimes use generative techniques,[4] most notably on Confield and EP7."

whereas in fact they've said:

"We do celebrate the futurism of that behaviour, but we’re here, it’s 2008, and kids might just presume the requirement to be hit with loads of detail and overlaid effects is there just to be valid – and I think that’s where it goes a bit wrong and people miss the point. We’ll get hit with, “oh it’s all random, algorithmic and generative” and if somebody can’t work out its metric arrangement, and can’t worked out if it’s looped or not, then they’re going to hit it and say it’s random twaddle. And that’s quite hurtful in a way, we don’t really get too upset by critics, but it just means that some people have missed the point." ( http://www.barcodezine.com/Autechre%20Interview.htm )

You might want to contact ~ism as he did this interview with Sean - http://forum.watmm.com/topic/30687-interview-with-sean-booth/#soundbite

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.
