cool, thanks for the suggestions. the tokina 11-17mm f2.8 looks pretty awesome and the reviews are solid as well. my only issue with it is that it doesn't have an internal focus motor, which means it won't auto-focus on the d5000. i haven't done much manual focusing, as all three of my lenses are AF-S, so i really don't know how much of a limitation this poses as. i'm thinking it would be worth it for how fast and wide the lens is.. i probably should learn how to manually focus anyway, and i imagine in the (distant) future i will upgrade to a full frame sensor body capable of auto-focusing on AF lenses.

just use manual focus; the focus ring on the Tokina is HUGE and really smooth, I've never used it on autofocus - not due to focus speed but just for how painless it is on manual

The wider you go the larger your dof will be which in turn makes missing focus a lot harder... so on the 11mm end at f8 you should be able to shoot just about anything at infinity.

Thanks! As for filter- yup, got a hoya polarizer on there (I think)

it's typically a combination of both camera and lens. a great camera is only as good as the lens in front of it, and vice versa. although, one could argue how much of a difference it ultimately makes when we're posting images 800x600 on the internet. the bright colors typically come photoshop, but are also dependent on the camera and lens. most people like to have their naked/raw shots to be as neutral/mild as possible so that their left with a more leeway in direction when it comes to editing.

what's this in reference to? I know that for my camera, I really wish I had the 11-16 Tokina a year or so ago when I was overseas. It is definitely sharper compared to the kits lens (Canon 18-55).. especially when in manual focus, as I don't notice any fringing (chromatic aberration) at all

that is a smug-ass duck. really interesting picture though, i like the coloring. how did you get so close?

this is from my parents' cottage on conesus lake, ny:

the ducks there have been inbreeding for generations, and as a result have lost their natural intuition to fly south.. they just sit in the middle of the lake all winter, herded into a gigantic cluster which stops the ice from forming.

i could go on and on about the fucking ducks on that lake. ridiculous creatures.
