wait...as far as i can tell we only have less than 1 percent of the leaked docs.

isn't everyone saying they are holding the best for last?

The Guardian are asking for suggestions of things to look for, which implies that they have finished looking in all the obvious places. So yeah, I think we've seen the best of it.

The big story here is not the content of the leaks, its the fact that Governments either have to accept things like this happening from now on, or else try and do their business under the crippling burden of super-secure communications. And that has been Assange's Big Idea from the start: Governments either have to accept more transparency or else lose most of the benefits of the information revolution.

This is a major chapter in the history of the internet, make no mistake. This will affect how people think about internet legislation, ideas, software and communications for many years to come.

yes, times are great! we've still seen only a percentage of the leaks and after that, the banking industry will be confronted with their own criminal bullcrap. times are changing for the better.

also just got a email from our university saying looking at the docs might impede our future careers.

This is incredible.

It's not the leaks that surprise me the most, some of the reactions are truly out of this world.

it is amazing. luckily ive avoided the problem, which is using the campus internet to look at it...which giv es me the impression that the government will cut funding if it happens (im at a public university)

I was under the impression (and I might be wrong, this might be totally unfounded), that they were saying anyone that has looked or even discussed wikileaks can be charged with aiding espionage/something similar?

if that's true it has massive implications for society.

heres the link to the whole espionage act:

Not what you said, but the whole thing that reading these leaks would cause some real world consequences to you. This in a land who is all about freedom of speech and spreading democracy around the world. That's some totalitarian bullshit right there. The US is just an awful sham.

apparently the us are looking to develop new laws which makes unauthorized reading of (leaked) confidential documents illegal. when the new laws are implemented, they are supposed to hold for the past as well. diplomats in europe confirm that even us politicians/diplomats are getting paranoid with respect to reading the original cables. sick

Source ? That would be so coward of the US...

you can't make new laws apply to the past. at least not in any decent legal system, doesn't your constitution say this?

and a law like that shouldn't pass anyway, too many gray areas to be actually enforceable.

ZOMG! Lazerz pew pew pew!!!!11!!1!!!!1!oneone!shift+one!~!!!

isn't that the idea though?

not to invoke Godwin's law, but from a structuralist standpoint, Hitler's government was founded on those principles....no set laws in a strict constitutional sense, everything could be interpreted as the officials immediately in charge saw fit...it was at least temporarily incredibly effective.

wow that's pretty fucking major, using no actual technical legalese to explain why to you but instead alluding via the chilling effect of veiled threats of federal arrest. pretty ominous and creepy as hell
