the internet comedy juggernaut that is the rubberbandits

Recommended Posts

a bit of background; they're basically taking the piss out of irish chavs. limerick has a rep as being the home of the chavviest of chavs.

  Quote
The RubberBandits are a comedy hip-hop duo from Limerick City in Ireland. Primarily a stage and television act, they have performed throughout Ireland.
  Quote
The members deliberately conceal their identity on stage and in interviews by disguising their faces with plastic bags. They perform under the names Blindboy Boatclub and Mr. Chrome, and their real names are generally not known.

Their style of comedy is satirical, surrealist and crude, and, in the same manner as television shows such as South Park, use toilet humour to make deeper political points or provide social commentary. This is best espoused in tracks such as Up The Ra, which employs the literary device of the unreliable narrator to lambast the Irish phenomenon of armchair republicanism. This is not the case with all their music, and they often employ crudeness merely for its own comedic value. Their work explores a number of themes that are of particular significance to Limerick Urban Youth, namely drug use, interaction with An Garda Síochána (the police), and violence. Works such as Too Many Gee(Gee = vagina) demonstrate their propensity to mock both the macho, hypersexualised culture of Limerick urban youth, and similar attitudes amongst mainstream hip hop acts, such as the bombastic track In Da Club by 50 Cent.

Their prank calls are amazing too.

I can't believe I missed them at electric picnic this year, although watching them tear crystal swing apart probably would've been a bit depressing even though they do deserve it for setting ireland's inernational reputation back 50 years.

this shit is a true lol. It's more than a joke though because the production is hella catchy and their lyrics/flow is pretty clever. I love the way they ape Michael Jackson in "Horse Outside". I suspect that a lot of it is over my head because it's pretty Ire-centric. I just wish that the reversed peace sign meant "fuck off" everywhere!

Yeah it is pretty hard to get to grips with if you're not irish there's a lot chav culture stuff and irish slang like the part where he trades the horse for a bag of "yokes" (ecstacy)

Another to thing to not is their accents are HUGELY exaggerated, no one here talks like that, well, almost no one....

It's a LOL. So they're an Irish Goldie Lookin' Chain?

Well Goldie Lookin' Chain were not very subversive. They just took the piss with their songs the rubber bandits are all about parodying chav culture whereas Goldie Lookin' Chain made into the charts and were pretty faggy and funny for about 5 seconds.

The only differences I can see are location and choice of drug: Newport = Limerick, soap bar = glue bag. Style and content are almost exactly the same.

I like GLC and I like the idea of the Queen being chased by a golf club with a turd on it.

The (possibly apocryphal) story is that the gesture originated with welsh and english longbowmen during the 100 years war. The French were terrified of them and would cut off the bowfingers of any captured. Hence the defiant two fingers being peculiarly British. "I still have my fingers and your flowers of French chivalry are well and truly fucked."

And you don't think these guys will be the viewed the same way in 2 years? Maybe I've given the Irish more credit than they deserve.

They're not in the same category.

I'm not being biased because they the ribber bandits are Irish, most Irish comedy shows are complete and utter shite, are equivalent to the BBC (RTE) is the worst channel in the entire world imo. They produce absolutely god awful comedians/ tv programmes these guys are the only decent ones in years.

Goldie Lookin' chain weren't comedians thats the difference. They were a piss take band that made extremely mild references gun crime, they were about parodying hip hop, they were wiggers basically and that was the joke, that they were lame basically.

There's a big difference.

Yeah, I don't see it. But anyway, there are two tracks that I like; musically and comedically. Much like Goldie Lookin' Chain.

That Irish jibe was a joke btw. I like Ireland mostly.

they started off with the prank calls... these guys are comedians first and musicians second

I meant they exaggerate their own accents/ way of speaking. As for not many people talking like that I meant to say in comparison to the rest of Ireland not in Limerick. Disregard my last post it was a bit of a shambles.

yes.

as we speak these guys are on the biggest talk show in the country, the late late show. shirtless, and wearing pimp coats.

Some dry shite giving out about the video. Another thing I love about the rubberbandits.

I heard the show live and one of our former ministers for defense was defending them.

Gotta love Irish polotics (you gotta hate it too though)
