i'm on and off. theres no reason to be though, his music is clearly quite interesting and good. i just don't feel too patient to listen to something like it which doesn't sound like it took very much effort at all to make.

still, "nobody here" is probably one of my favorite artistic creations everrr

i love his stuff, though i find it a bit disappointing that there's so many followers of his sound, but he still does it better than any of them.

another thing/problem i have is that these so called followers are all perhaps following things that came out 40 years before [popul vuh ashra tangerine dream and some new age albums of all time

agreed. i've decided to just relax and enjoy the sounds, and not get caught up in the particulars. perhaps others do the same thing he does just as well, but i'm too old to go chasing them all down to figure out who's genuinely talented and original and who's just following.

you're never too old for anything [?????] but I do completely agree also with this way of approaching it. i tend to overanalyze music in the pursuit of an ultimate understanding of it all - so that in the process of deconstructing and seeking truth the soul might get worn out and the actual enjoyment of the music itself might be degraded.

okay, fair enough, but two little hellraisers between the ages of 10 months and 3 years will significantly sap the amount of beard scratching time one has!

(that said, my three year old has requested that i put in snd on the way to daycare. oh yeah.)

Gave Returnal a listen after seeing it mentioned on so many album of the year lists and I wasn't overly impressed by it. Granted, it's not the usual thing I listen to, but couldn't really see what made it stand out from every other noisy ambient sort of thing.

he's one of the more compelling newer ambient artists i've heard, there are only a few tracks of his i've heard that i don't like. for a mostly beatless artist he has a very high ratio of immediately pleasurable tracks.

edit: for all of the electronic music that has gained a lot of hype through pitchfork and places like boomkat, i think Oneothrix point never deserves the hype much more than most of the people he shares it with.

I love Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Ashra, Michael Hoenig, all that other Berlin School shit. That being said, I don't understand how people call out Oneohtrix Point Never as being unoriginal (or untalented). Unless I'm listening to the wrong albums by those artists, his sound is pretty different, imo. The influence is there, but I think that's where it stops: A lot of his songs are too short to even be considered Berlin School, the structure of his longer tracks is more tied to ambient music, his tones are way too digitized, and a fair amount of it is too dense and noisey, etc. Also, his music doesn't have a cheesy, spiritual sound. New Age/Adult Contemporary music is cheesy as fuck. I don't mean to come across as a fan boy or anything, I'm just trying to understand where this whole argument comes from.

As a follow up, Klaus Schulze's Moondawn album was done in one night. Obviously not a lot of time spent working on it, and it's considered his best work. Peter Rehberg picked OPN up for a reason :cisfor:.

i'd suggest taking a listen to Rifts or A Pact Between Strangers, while i like returnal it's not where i'd start with his stuff

It's funny how I consider myself pretty well attuned to good artists/albums coming out under the broad umbrella of 'electronica' (that is, compared to the average music fan, not the average WATMMer*), yet I literally never heard of this dude until the album it was Bleep's no. 1 of 2010. Guess I'll have to check him out and see what all the fuss is about...

im not aware of this hype, other than that pitchfork gave their new album a review.

maybe you people should stop reading so many hipster blogs, and you will be able to get into more good music rather than staying away from it because too many people like it...
