This is the best news. Been devouring Skodvin's stuff recently. Flare is amazing.

Thanks for the heads up.

so how does the deaf center stuff compare with skodvin's solo output? i've only heard the latter, and i love it.

It's not as dark; a bit more expansive and dreamy but still hugely evocative. More piano and synth. Go find Pale Ravine - there's no way you won't dig it.

Yeah, not as dark by a long shot, and it's also a completely different style of music. It's modern classical stuff, whereas Skodvin's solo work is dark ambient and just experimental doom stuff. The Nest album is great too (Otto from Deaf Center and some other dude), which is also modern classical.

I think it's in talking about music like this that the limitations of genre labels become apparent. There really is a lot of crossover. Skodvin uses strings and piano in his solo/Svarte Greiner stuff as well and there's also a lot of unusual field recordings and drone work on the Deaf Center stuff. It's all fucking great though. Can't wait for the new stuff.

I suppose this is true, but his stuff is way more abstract and some of the elements aren't as obvious as they are in most modern classical albums. In Deaf Center there's a bunch of string swells and what not. I've never seen his Svarte Greiner stuff described as classical. People that love Deaf Center might not enjoy that project of his (i.e. myself for the most part).

Great news! (Is that the cover on their website?) It doesn't say anything...

The Nest album is great, was so happy to see the EP expanded and released on cd.

  • 3 weeks later...

It's still coming out in February. Vinyl copies will come with a bonus disc of outtakes reworked by Svarte Greiner.
