any of you collect any knives? or keep knives around for every day use?

what type of knife do you prefer and why?

what purpose do knives have in your life?

i have always enjoyed a nice, well-made knife. i'm picky about them though

and don't trust chinese/taiwanese build quality generally.

i'd like a set of culinary knives but i don't cook enough to ever use them,

and wouldn't allow myself to spend money on a low quality set.

knives usually serve utilitarian purposes for me, but they're almost always

built for survival and self-defense.

for years i kept ka-bar utility knives on me at all times

used both the regular size and small, 7 3/4" and 5 3/4" blades respectively.

i used them for a LOT of things whether opening boxes, cutting branches, cutting wire, etc..

and the one with a 7 inch blade saved my ass from being locked out of my truck without help

on many occasions.

i'm upgrading to a ranger RD-7 soon.. much stronger steel and build quality.

i love knives. ;)

thankfully i have never been put in a situation where i would need to use one as a weapon.

hopefully i never do.

-Cold Steel Recon 1, I know cold steel videos are loltastic but this is actually a fun knife to have. The washer to open it quickly from your pocket never fails to impress or scare.

-SOG Seal Team Elite, looks sweet.

-ESEE Izula

-ESEE Junglass

-Benchmade mini Griptillian (what I carry every day)

-I have a ka-bar too, think it's made by Ontario. It's my beater knife I use when having bonfires. Going to get an ESEE 6 eventually to replace it.

-Also have some ww2 era german knives that my grandpa and his brother gave me. But I don't show them off, they're creepy.

Dont carry knives, once one is produced its clear where the argument is going. Id rather just fucking run or give them my wallet or whatever.

i would like to buy this knife, just because it looks cool.

nice knives! i'm weary of cold steel, probably because their website states "world's strongest, sharpest knives".

and then there's the fact that a lot of their mid to high end knives are manufactured in china/taiwan. this wouldn't be so bad

if the prices weren't ridiculously high for the materials used. but i bet they do make solid knives and looking into it that Recon 1 seems to be one of their best.

of your bunch i'm drooling over the ESEEs. how's your Junglass holding up? i looked their their catalog today while browsing for a new survival knife and was very impressed. still ended up settling for the Ranger RD-7, now manufactured by OKC. i'm still open to change my mind though, if i find one in its price range that stands out. i'm also looking to move away from 1095 carbon steel and on to something stronger, in this case upgrading to 5160 which is quite tough but won't take all day to sharpen like D2 or something.

why do you like knives?

The junglass is new and I forgot to bring it to my last bonfire so it hasn't had much use. For making firewood I like having a hatchet and the ka-bar more. I'll be clearing an overgrown trail at a family members mountain house in a few months with the junglass. That sog and recon 1 were gifts, not that I'm complaining. Btw the izula is tough to sharpen right, I imagine the other esee knives are as well. However, it's tough as hell. I've thrown it at a target hundreds of times with no dings in it.

Oh ye, I forgot that people hear might actually live in a country sort of surroundings. Having a Knife in an urban area is baaaad though.

A few that are never far away from me...

Not neccesarily a knife.. but a tactical pen does the job just as good.

And I still keep my kabar nearby. ;)

crafting things around the house, camping, opening cans, prying stuck things,

cutting and chopping wood, cutting down waste material,

doing electrical work and plumbing, opening locked cars,

forcing entry into things i can't open, cutting pages cleanly,

cutting cloth, cabling, and rope, and probably bunch of other random shit like chopping steaks

when i'm given a shitty steak knife.

then there's also the safety of having one near you..

in the event of an emergency a quality knife could be lifesaving,

getting tangled in debrii or a seatbelt during a crash especially.

i've ripped open massive holes through metal doors with my old ka-bar and

i could see that being useful if i were stuck in a building with no way out.

i'm no survivalist or anything but shit happens.. i enjoy the utility of a knife enough to warrant carrying one often

so on both bases i'm covered.

then lastly there's the very unlikely event that myself or others are threatened in some way..

swift and quick action with a large knife could spell doom for an unsuspecting attacker.

even still its easily the last reason on my list of why i like knives and i do not carry them with the intent to harm people.

yeah you really can't go wrong with a ka-bar

for such a cheap knife the build quality is unmatched by anything else on the market.

probably going to end up getting another set after my next couple purchases.

yeah the metals those ESEE knives are made from is pretty durable. but at least you won't lose edge quick.

i'm sure that junglass will prove worthy on the trail!

yeah i think if i lived in a city i'd certainly be carrying fixed blades that are easily concealable.

regardless of what i use them for i'd rather not have someone getting the wrong impression.

Thats alot of cash right there... Good thing is, when you buy quality, you buy once, unless you lose them.

can't say i know much about them. i received an old multi-tool

as a gift one christmas.. it says "BEAR CLAWS" on the side, made in USA

but i have no idea what company made it.

glad you reminded me, still need to get an EdgePro..

i have a Lansko 5 stone sharpening kit that works decent but a lot harder to setup and operate.

is suncraft a brand or a type of knife? i can only find one on google, a small japanese pairing knife.

he pretty much only makes switchblades, otf, and sometimes spiked knuckles with switchblades and balisongs, so anything you get is likely illegal to carry. other than that downside they're the best quality switchblades I'm aware of. pricey, yes; mine was a gift.

i've been knifed

Upon opening this thread I wasn't too sure about it. Then upon further consideration, my father always carried a knife and I'm seeing the benefits in getting a solid one now as well, even just to keep in the office/studio for mundane tasks.

But then I'm not sure if my laziness would just take over and I'd reach for scissors like I always do...or worse yet...use my car keys to cut tape on packages...
