People say this is quite a bit different from The Finger and is more customizable

Whoop-a-de-dooo-dah, I'm so thrilled. Just watch the interview with that slimy asymmetric cretin. If you don't vomit, you're not human.

I played with demo and it is killer.

Also, you can hate on BT all you want, but he has a knack for cool minutia in production (however douchey his hair may be, which is very).

Isn't "The Finger" just the same as SugarByte's "Artillery 2"?

I'm so conflicted about this... I can tell it is better quality than the finger, and I am looking for a software alternative to the atomizer on the virus ti (which to my ears sound fantastic, but is somewhat buggy, and then when I am working away from my studio, I have to work without it. Additionally, it's bugginess makes me hesitant to use it in live situations). Knowing the amount of work that went into BTs plugin, and also from the audio demos alone, I can tell this is the answer to my problem.

However, for reasons I won't get into, I do not want to give a dime to BT. I am also not one to pirate software. My choice, I know.

So now, I have to make a choice... And I'm not sure what it'll be... :-/

I reckon this would be good to use as a DJ tool more so than a production tool (FOR ME), although I'd need to try it before I can say that. I just like to do the shit manually if I'm going to glitch shit, cuz I'm a control freak, and things like this make me feel less in control. Plus it seems lazy. BUT, Izotope is the bee's knees. Shit, I use Trash in every song. EVERY SONG.

I think this is a nifty way to get a few cool effects when you need them and an awesome way to do stuff live. I feel like for production if I end up using it I'll probably just phase it mostly out after a year or so (assuming Renoise steps up its automation game). It's mostly wrapping my head around the possibilities it lays out so easily that I'm interested in.

I like to perform my stutters in real time, do multiple takes, and edit the best bits together. It just makes it more interactive and immediate, which I like. I can go crazy in post production with manual edits all I like, but MIDI performable stutters set the foundation.

I'm at the point where the 'add an effect to the last 4 beats of this measure' electronic music effect has become very boring. I think the whole laptop + kaospadd thing kind of desensitized me to the whole practice, id say a good 40% of electronic musicians out here perform this way.

edit: it's evolved to the point where a lot of djs now do it, especially since these DJ mixers now have stutter effects built into them, more often than not its distracting and takes me out of the experience. this probably is the result of most people not modifying the presets, so people who do this with style and grace, i'm not talking about you :emotawesomepm9:

edit2: i'm also a nit picker and would much rather stutter at the source instead of on the end of the chain, meaning stutter your actual midi pattern or retrigger your samples and change the loop length before they go to any effects. Numerology is the only program i've seen that nicely implemented midi stutter effect

I like to use combinations of techniques... MIDI repeats have a hugely different result than an audio stutter. An audio stutter on just one drum in a kit allows for more individual control, and an audio stutter on a drum mix bus is more in your face. Why pick one? I'm working on a template in live that allows me to apply any of the aforementioned techniques on any single or combination of elements. The computing power is there, it's just a matter of getting it all setup, so only have to worry about it all once.

To me a stutter is just another compositional tool, not an effect. It's been made to be such a simple process now (ie this new program) that it makes more in-depth and more complex things possible. It's up to the user to use it in a fresh, or at least tactful way, if not totally raising the bar for what is expected with this technique.

I like stutters, a lot. I LOATH poorly done stutters, because what it comes down to, to me, is compositional laziness. If at any point the technology slaps you across the face with cliche, all the blame lays on the composer for thier lack in vision and/or effort.

A great musician could make a gorgeous piece of music with a sine wave generator, an envelope generator, and this stutter software. It's the composition within the medium, that matters.

There are only so many audio / synthesis techniques out there... It's how use utilize and combine them, and software like this just makes this one technique easier, because that is what technological evolution is all about... Making old approaches easier so that you can take it to the next level. It really kills me when fans of music technology lament....music technology, and all the steps required for the process of evolution to take place.

What all of your arguments really come down to is : we don't like bad music.

Well no shit.

haha... well.... a lot of the performers i'm thinking of in my rant above actully make great music, one of them that comes to mind is Cevin Key. The guy is for sure in my top 10 electronic musicians. However his set was puncuated with endless stutters and quick flanges at an alarming rate. The source material before the effects was amazing. It seems to be an all too common way to add a 'live' element to your abelton setup (kaos), and i find it at this point distracting and abrasive. I'm curious though how a Brian Trif *Cough* i mean BT designed stutter plugin would actually be better or different than what's come out before. *proceeds to download*

If you went out to more electronic shows in SF Matt i think you too would find this trend irritating, you've possibly already witnessed it. Especially since Kcinsu does his stuttering with finesse

We have to come terms that this kind of software/gear evolutions are not going to slow down. I have been annoyed by how much easier it's gotten to produce music every year, that more and more people pick it up as a hobby but like Kinscu is saying it's just another tool that people can using horribly or use really tastefully and push the envelope with. I can say for one that I am not going to be using this like a lazy tasteless teenager who just got a wah pedal.

OK, I have to admit, after playing with this for 2 days, I'm pretty damn impressed. This goes deep. As a sound design tool, this is fantastic.

sigh.
