Has anyone tested the theory that Paulstretch turns anything into epic melodic ambiance by using it on a recording of totally random dissonant banging on piano keys or a violin?

it does depend on the source material. but a lot of things do sound good stretched.

i didn't win, but i got a personal mention from peter and many people imitated it, hehe.

Paulstretch has got a shit load fuck ton of artificial smoothing to make the ridiculous time stretches work smoothly so yeah even bad recordings would get a slightly under water digital turd polish but doesn't generate any melodic content or anything. If you feed it dissonance, it will still come out sounding really dissonant but it might be kinda "TRIPPY DUDE". There definitely are many things that don't sound that interesting, nice, cool etc. through Paulstretch.
