Musical Maturity

Recommended Posts

I don't think anyone is necessarily correlating calm slow music with mature music... at least that's not the sense that I got.

i've gotten more patient, more willing to take care of the details... but that's more about my level of maturity than the music.

edit: and of course, i'm always amassing more knowledge of music --> deeper understanding of what i'm doing --> deeper music --> more knowledge of music

For me, Hat's first post 'bout sums mine up as well. One matures or grows a bit in some way (whether it's patience, or just letting the music go, or not having to sound perfect, or whatever), and then it would theoretically show in the music.

I've never done any of that fast glitchy beat stuff, wasn't even aware of it until like two years ago. I guess the stuff I was doing earlier this year is pretty SAWy, mostly because that's the kind of stuff I was listening to at the time. But it was subconscious imitation, I'm pretty sure. After a while I lost interest in that style & have moved on to different things (which aren't finished yet).

Most of the processes above (besides TechDiff's and a couple of others) can be summarized to "went from dicking about ripping off drukqs to dicking about ripping off SAW/analord".

Not that dicking about is inherently bad, but if you go from "dicking about" to "dicking about" and the purported fruits of your "musical maturity" are jams and aimless fucking around "that is more chill/more slow", you've not matured musically. At best, you've matured as a listener, and gotten over the glorification of fast/hard/dense... And that in turn informs your music and then you do a couple of slow/simple/chilled-out tracks and it's suddenly easier (because there's less to do) and you pump shit out faster, and then with an oblivious sigh of relief you think "boy I've sure matured". Nah, you've just gone soft, or were soft to begin with and you stopped trying too hard.

HEY CHASSIS HE'S TALKING ABOUT YOUR CRAPPY MUSIC

Naw i'm not, Anflec is closer to maturity that most fuckers 'round these parts. He just underachieves with beats/production, and that hurts his otherwise lush-as-fuck tunes. Peeps like chassis, or sup, or data are definitely not who I'm talking about.

Actually, i nominate Mitch Murder for most eloquent example of musical maturity to be found among regular EKT posters.

Tht Tne! for worst example...

I've been getting groovier and more textural as far as electronic stuff goes, but the majority of my musical career has been playing live. I credit my playing chops to playing worship songs in youth group and my theory chops to my private instructors and college professors. I might not have even started writing music had it not been for ending up in alternative school for a while. I probably would have though.

the long story:

Guest Blanket Fort Collapse

I've definitely drastically matured as a producer vastly above my old unrefined production hat the last few years but I don't think much has changed in the last 5 years in what I enjoy making (which is still a very wide selection of vibes/genres) Last month I made the craziest, heaviest, most technical, ass shaking tech metal track I've touched and also some of the most beautiful, human, delicate, chill stuff. My song writing skills I think were still great 5 years ago but they were lacking in production creativity and polish. Besides maturing my production, I am really happy with how I've learned to bravely approach unexpected vocal styles on things most vocalists wouldn't have the balls to try.

god this thread (that is, that serious posts) once again make me feel like I'm such a later bloomer, and a shitty bloomer at that.

1991 - born

did nothing interesting until 2007

2006 - was introduced to aphex twin, instantly loved it, sold all my other cds

2007 - started creating weird youtube poops, noise, etc.

soon started creating weird melodies in fl studio

2008 - created some ambient using free vsts, started stockpiling cheap acoustic instruments and circuitbending

2009 - created some shitty cut-up crap, and fake acid

2010 - bought some analog for cheap on shopgoodwill.com and started putting together hardware, circuitbending, fl studio, and acoustic instruments

2011 - dicked around on the internet (so far)
