unrelated thought/experience: i got a 32 gig ocz onyx and i had nothing but trouble from it. apparently you're supposed to format it and install new firmware (or something) to get the advertised read/write speeds... too bad that's where my os is installed! it'd be a bitch to install a new one on my seagate barracuda, format & update the firmware, install on the onyx, uninstall on the seagate. i am not going through that song and dance. ocz totally lost a customer with that.

on the other hand, my mom bought the crucial m4 a couple of weeks ago for her mac pro and the set-up was super easy and it's very fast. i can vouch for them.

why not just use clonezilla to make a clone of your current install, format and flash firmware, and then restore your cloned disk image?

because i didn't think of that. i'm not going to do it now, though, since i've got a nice 256gb on the way.

ahh fair enough. If you're not familiar with clonezilla, it's fucking useful for things like that.

clonezilla can be downloaded and put on a USB flash thingy, or you can get Parted Magic which is basically a nice lean Linux distro that runs from a USB flash drive or CD that has clonezilla on it, as well as a bunch of other nifty tools for computery stuff. Edited by oscillik

An important source of information should be anandtech: http://www.anandtech.com/tag/storage

Personally, I'm too much of an Apple zealot to add something meaningful. All I can say is that I'm happy with my hybrid SSD/HDD computer. SSD are still not too big (for an affordable price), so it's always handy to have a bigger HDD close at hand.

BTW, it's amazing how fast you'll get comfortable with the increase in speed. When switching to the HDD, it usually has to awake first, speed up the disk. And you're noticing you suddenly can hear all those things. You didn't in the HDD age, but in the SSD age, you're suddenly aware of the limitations of a HDD. And the speed of the SSD, wel it feels obvious pretty quick.

I have a Crucial SSD that I've had for about a year or so now. It works great and hasn't died.

There will be new love from the ashes of us.
