Playback would begin at random points and jump in a non-linear fashion around the file and create a new listening experience every time. It would be ultimate fanboy fuckery i.e. man part x was wicked! I CAN'T GET MINE TO DO IT!, etc. if only, if only. i've been working towards doing something not quite that cool, but with the same basic randomize/same tempo/etc idea, for a little while now. shit's difficult. edit: i missed my main point. ...but if anyone could do that sort of thing, it would be AE. i'd love to see them release something that could actually do what you're saying. it'd be awesome. this guy for instance has made something hat's heading this direction: http://www.icarus.nu/FFD/ basically you get a unique album, it's cool. would be great if ae did something like that.. or finally, Gantz Graf: the game. why not something running on a server where you have to log in to experience it, that keeps changing and changing over the years? but yeah shit's difficult :] Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/63327-ready/page/8/#findComment-1783911 Share on other sites

thehauntingsoul
I think the randomized playback order is a bit contrived. It's not really all that much different than hitting shuffle on your mp3 player. These things tend to get advertisement saying "10000000 different albums in one!!!" and really it's just one album that is meant to be played on shuffle. I'm thinking something more interactive, like an integrated max/msp app that allows you to tweak various mysterious parameters and actually get a completely different set of sounds and rhythms than someone else would. Even mini-disc doesn't accomplish this. Sure, you can listen to it endlessly on shuffle but does that really make it a different experience? I want something interactive and fully generative. I think Autechre, if anyone, could pull it off and make it a masterpiece. I'm sure some of the patches that Autechre have written have the potential for this. The trick would be trying to get it to sound relatively good most of the time without degrading into complete noise. Some of that is nice but I think that's probably the major pitfall of this sort of thing. That the output can't really be reproduced would make debugging the thing a total nightmare. modey
I like the album awepittance released a while ago that was two different sets of short tracks that were to be played at random with no gaps. It was all at the same tempo so it all stayed in sync, but since there were two tracks playing at once you'd get different combinations each time. That way it was made up of distinct tracks and not just random generative nonsense. fake edit: ah, here it is (Improvised Electronic Music): http://recordlabelrecords.org/fluorescent-grey.html Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide modey's signature Hide all signatures youtube | bandcamp | soundcloud | twitter | facebook 0F.digital Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/63327-ready/page/8/#findComment-1784743 Share on other sites

I think you're forgetting the fact that at the time, the MiniDisc format was the only one that had zero-seek time, thus making the shuffle mode actually conducive to what they were going for. The Gescom MiniDisc album is purely a product of it's time. Yes, it really was a different experience back then. Much like listening to Switched On Bach was a different experience back then. Of course, these days synthesizers and shuffle mode are all too common, and both are literally available to kids. thehauntingsoul
Of course, I'm not knocking minidisc so much as suggesting how much farther a project of this sort could go given today's technology. thehauntingsoul
I'm getting sick of watching my favourite IDM artists one by one descend into mundane poppy crap. First it was Squarepusher, then it was BoC, and now Clark with the utter disaster idiotphillic. RDJ at least had the sense to jump out of the game before he soiled his reputation with old-age-softness. It's pretty much all riding on Autechre now, and after Oversteps/Move of Ten I'm getting a little bit worried. Their next album needs to be complete auditory destruction to restore my faith in this wonderful genre. As a side-note, Plaid is also continuing to produce quality IDM, even if it did take them 10^24 years to release Scintilli. IDM needs something new, and it's somewhat astonishing it hasn't arrived yet given the nature of IDM. I mean, people will say "oh well it's not commercially viable anymore" and stuff, but was it ever? I thought IDM was about breaking musical boundaries. Anyways artists need to stop going soft, where is the sensory annihilation from the 00's? /rantfueledbyclarksshittynewcd Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide thehauntingsoul's signature Hide all signatures Last.fm SteamID: Thehauntingsoul My EP Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/63327-ready/page/8/#findComment-1790316 Share on other sites
