When I was a kid I cut my hand and it got infected. I remember the pus-y scab had what looked like white hairs matted into it, that I could easily have misread as growing out of it (in hindsight I'm guessing they were bits of clothing that had become stuck in the wound, or even part of the healing process itself). Wouldn't surprise me if these people got a wound, scratched it and it became infected, and then they noticed these "hairs" and being hypochondriacs, blew it totally out of proportion.

This is just the latest "multiple chemical sensitivity", except even less credible.
