Scrumpy is a term often used for strong ciders made in West Country of England.[1] The term is especially used to distinguish those made locally in smaller quantities and using traditional methods from mass produced branded ciders.

The name is believed to derive from the obsolete dialect term "scrimp", meaning a small or withered apple, which also gave rise to the verb "scrump", meaning to steal fruit.[2][3] It can be applied to basic home made ciders as well as to commercially produced and marketed varieties.

Scrumpy can be dry or sweet, however tends to be stronger in alcohol and more tannic than most commercial ciders. It is often cloudy in appearance, and is usually still rather than carbonated.

Scrumpy was often featured in the songs of The Wurzels, a folk/comedy/country group from South West England, especially in the song "I Am A Cider Drinker".[citation needed]

LOL I remember being behind the bar in padstow when this titchy wee lad comes in, couldn't have been more than 11 or 12.

"'ave you got any Scrumpy?"

"No sorry."

"No Scrumpy? Let's go somewhere else da'" with a look of utter contempt.

I wanted to smash the wee git in the mouth, but fuck it, he's probably gotten enough of it.

My mum and brother love scrumpy, but I hate the stuff and thus was shunned from my local pubs for my crazy city ideas of requesting vodka-cokes.

There was one I remember my mum buying called 'Cripple Cock', mmmmmm temptingly named.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

My Dads a proper cider drinker, and always regaled us kids with tales of wickedly strong scrumpy with bits of dead rat floating in it and it being so cloudy it looked barely potable.Every year the Peace Festival would come to our town and Dad would stock up on flaggons of scrumpy with names like 'Evil 'Eds' & 'Strewth!'.

Nearest I ever get is apple juice.I Wonder why...
