Reason 5

I've always wanted to but yeah, I'm really all for it now. Going to Moog Audio tomorrow and am picking up a MPD18 for $100.

What about Ableton? Or is Reason better? Or do they both do the same shit?

You could try both. There is no definite software for ambient music. I have used Reason and Ableton to make ambient music and I don't really know which I prefer. I could PM you some of my compositions and tell you what I used for each of them.

Sure.. I guess just by messing around on each platform and see what works.. I'm currently learning how to use Reason 5, picked up some tutorials. Also, I'm purchasing the MPD18, what about midi keyboards? I found 3 around my price range:

Should I get one of these as well or just stick with the MPD18 pads?

For making ambient I definitely suggest you get more than 25 keys.

Korg or the M-Audio then.

Perhaps I'll just buy the MDP18 and then once I get the hang of it, purchase the MIDI keyboard?

I have Reason 4, but I only use it very occasionally in a re-wire capacity nowadays, with Live. Should I get V5? Are the new toys worth playin with, or would it be redundant?

ok, i know there's a demo, I know you can pirate it, and I know you can buy it. Based on my question above, I was hoping for some anecdotal experience with the fucking shit so I don't have to waste my time downloading and installing shit n shit n shit nshit hella hella derp.

Question:

I'm a new user to Ableton, and I was following the "creating beats" lesson in the Help View window, and basically when I dragged one of the Impulse instrument racks into the MIDI column and then selected a sample (I believe it was Backroom), when I hit my keys on my MPD18 nothing happened. Then I went into Preset B on my MIDI and some notes work but not all, then Preset C and other notes worked but not all.. how come they all don't work on my MIDI? kinda annoying..
