My least favorite ae album, way less accessible than Confield IMO

I haven't completely given up on it, but I really just don't enjoy listening to this album except for bits and pieces

Standout tracks for me are Xylin Room, 6IE.CR, and Theme Of Sudden Roundabout

Best cover art by far though, I love it

love the mashin' that occurs in 6IE CR, and the 2nd half of it. the latter half of it is some of my favorite autechre. rainform puls starts off great (good metallic sounds too) but gets too skittish and unsettled as it accelerates. surripere is a good track except it's decay/transformation seems too abrupt and haphazard. VLAL 5 is a definite standout for me (wheezy smouldering)

i dig it, but it can get pretty dense at times. fave things are the room kit drum sounds on some tracks and the pad sounds. complicated but warm, whereas untilted was more metallic and cool.

After listening to Autechre for the last 13+ years I must say I have nothing bad to say about any of their material. Draft is no exception. I LOVE IT!!! the sonic landscape hearkens back to Amber in a way while still being completely new. Favorites (besides the whole cd) are 61e.cr with it's slow Q-bert-esque robotic funk. Tapr with it's ever recurring hurry up to get back to the start percussion loop. Surripere's tempo shifts after a nice ebb and flow beginning. Theme Of Sudden Roundabout reminds me of something hideous and fascinating moving through space and time we cannot comprehend or see ( think H.P. Lovecraft's stories come to life in the form of music ). Vl Al 5 is like a mental vacation where you have no cares, just put your mind in neutral and coast. V-Proc is tied for favorite on this release, It builds and builds up to 1:27 in the song and then it justs explodes in all directions. Kind of like a car turning over and over without starting until the engine catches and takes your ears for a spin through a changing aural scenery. Simple straight forward composition for Ae on this track but I feel it works quite well. Reniform Puls might take the winners crown on this release. The chill beginning that works itself up into a frenzy by less than halfway into the song. The constant onslaught of perfectly timed beats is always one step ahead of your ears, as soon as you "catch" it, it flees ahead of you only to tempt you on further and further. As with alot of Ae's work it is very hard to be "in the moment" while listening, true appreciation and smiles come after the song is over making you hit the repeat button to try to catch that fleeting snippet of clarity that is so elusive. Long live Sean and Rob.

Draft is my favorite autechre album. I like it because it has the weird harmonies and synths that Confield has, but with more exciting drum programming. I love all those buzzy grainy sounds they get.

If the album was all in the style of the first section of Surripere then my ears would explode with happiness. The first section (before it all breaks down) is simply stunning.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

I like it more than Confield, and recently I think its bumped LP5 down a notch. This one seems to be a real grower, and its taking its time. Lots of good stuff here, IV VV V-whatever, 6iCIR-whatever (halfway through becomes awesome), VL AL5, PN::T-whatever, Reniform Plus, all killer tracks. Xylin Room and Surripere I'm not to big on, but they'll probably grow on me. Surripere starts kinda cool, but becomes kinda meh.

  • 1 month later...

i totally can't grasp confield though i think draft totally wails. confield to me sounds like the music is mutating and then destroyed and draft i feel the same way but rather than destroyed it holds together by a thread. if that makes any since. 6icr (sp) totally rocks and is the highlight for me but some of those slower tracks like the first two are totally great as well

i'd really like to know how the boys made this album because it doesn't sound entirely max/msp to me.

ps. the artwork blows my mind and buying it on vinyl just for the cover art and the sleaves is def recommended

draft was my introduction to autechre and it has a special place in my heart. I remeber when I first listened to that first track, I thought it was alright/weird... and then after 3 minutes, I thought to myself "why the fuck am I listening to all those random nonsense radio noises??". of course, after a lil' time I got used to it and loved it.

I really think that draft is one of the best ae records, it seems so cohesive and complete, I mean, everything is at the right place and everything is done oh so well. I haven't heard it in a while, you guys make me want to listen to it now !!
