How do you respond to this question in a general salutation form (when applicable)?

I am well is a little ummm...

word spoken: "good."

thoughts in head while speaking: none.

"i'm doing well," is perfectly fine for suburban alcoholic moms. it seems a little bourgeois though.

I think "I am well" isn't even all that grammatically correct. It's a bit misleading. Were you sick before? So now we have to talk about that? The point is to give the vaguest answer possible so as to avoid further discussion.

i usually say "swell."

I might start saying "I am well and good."

I'm guessing everyone here knows that fancy-pants contraction "I'm", Fred.

I usually end up saying something like "wellll.....you know.....probably good.....I think?"

Happy & healthy pretty much covers it.

'good,' said in a dismissive manner so conversation ends.

i usually ignore it and just say hello

them: "hey how are you?"

me: "hi, whats going on?"

the worse thing about pointlessly asking people how they are is when you hear it on like talk radio or tv with real people asking the host and the host having to ask them back to be polite. just tell them you love the show and get the fuck off

It's funny. My impulse is to check "I'm well" because that is how my mind operates grammatically.

However, I had to go with "I'm good" because that is what I would probably say if someone asked me in person, even though it clearly is improper language.

this is my kind of technique too

Upon further reflection (and having just experienced this exchange) my initial reflex is to say "I'm okay." or "I'm alright." I do say "I am well." to more civil company.

I usually reply, "I'm ok, but I'm still a bit upset about the LTM forum," and then stare forlornly into the middle distance.

The reply I hate the most when I ask "how are you today?'- "you know..."
