I've used garageband plenty of times, it's alright. It's done alright for recording real instruments. Never used the virtual instruments and actually didn't know it had that. Must be for the ipad only because I've only used it on a laptop. The virtual instruments seem pointless when there's better stuff out there for making electronic music.

my brother makes great stuff using garageband instruments. check him out, colinDESU on soundcloud.

So I bought this a couple days ago. First off let me say, this is in no way a replacement for pro software. Creative people will be able to get a fair amount out of it though. Also, it's an 8 track recorder for 5 bucks. That right there is a deal.

It is very simple to use... But it's FUN. Fuck, I remember when I was 14, and I had to find pirated copies of software, and it wasn't intuitive, I had no idea what I was doing. Sure that has it's pluses, but I do wish it would have been easier to comprehend... I think I would have developed faster. With this, a 14 year old can start getting such instant decent results, that I can't help but feel it will give them confidence in their own ears and creativity. A lot of people, I think, are never given an opportunity to explore their own creative outlets. I think people are all alot more creative than they think they are... They just were never in a position to discover that fact. Stuff like this, I feel is a great easy way for people to get inspired, explore, and begin developing their musical ear. As they grow, they will seek out more complex means, but I again, I really think things like this foster a creative spirit, that otherwise might have been dormant.

I watched a Ted talk about this online math/physics education website that is being uses in schools, and allow for students to move at their own pace, and gives them a chance to realize their potential... And based on the data, they found that after a "slow" student passes a certain hurdle, they begin to learn faster and easier and within a short time are achieving the same result that the "gifted" students were achieving. It's about giving peopl the opportunity to realize their potential... And if it means holding their hand and letting them take longer to realize their abilities.. so be it. It evens out in the end.

Thats kind of how I feel about intro music software like this. It makes it easy to grasp, and gives confidence. And it's presented in a modern form, which is important.

So for all of you that cry about how much shitty music stuff like this will allow... Try turning your perspective and see how much more great music there is potential for, when you give more people the opportunity to try... It's a stepping stone to greater things.

Will this replace ableton live and my synths? No. But I sure wish the 14 year old me had started with something like this. And I'm happy for the future generations and the doors things like this open....
