i'm leaning towards android because they don't seem terrified over the idea of you tinkering with the phone's guts, and because iphone is a bit $overpriced.

i was only slightly kidding about the hurtling car thing... i'm fine with complicated tech, i love it in fact, but a phone needs to be a functional thing, first and foremost.... and apple does have a knack for functional devices. ones that are easy to operate out of the corner of your eye, with one hand, while driving.

can android compete there? in ease of use, i mean...

I hurtle down the highways about 3-4 hours a day and use android non-stop (I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS UNLESS YOU'RE A PROFESSIONAL DRIVER -- obligatory warning). I find it to be VERY functional with the right apps.

for voice commands I use VLINGO app. can look up websites, execute commands like telephone, compose emails or txt, use google maps to find directions and load them etc. You can also shortcut specific websites or phone numbers or anything basically to your main screen. My two most called numbers have shortcuts on my main page which just need one press.

I use the recorder a lot and it's basically one press on the main screen and I can start talking and create memos (with unique names etc).

for txting I use SWYPE. easy to use one-handed and after about a couple weeks of regular use you can actually do it blind for the most part. Just need to look once in a while for far letters at other edge of screen.

If you want to get even more funtional (but complicated) you can install TASKER which can do all kinds of crazy shit like for example I have set a task which utilizes my GPS and my memo program so that when I get home at the end of the day (within 25 meters of my home actually) my list of to-do's (which syncs with GOOGLE tasks on my google calendar!!!) pops up and starts giving me my important to-dos for the night.

I also use TASKER so that when I'm working with my patients my phone automatically goes into silent mode... does this by setting a task which recognizes certain types of appointments on my calendar.

I also set it up so that between the hours of 8pm and 8am it stays in vibrate (unless certain numbers call).

TASKER can do incredible things.

Android basically is function over form while I think apple is the opposite.

iOS there are only a couple of things i would want to do (music) that arent in the core apps

that i'd definitely agree with you on. just got an iphone 4 on monday—my first smartphone ever, actually. but so far, i'd still latch onto iOS, shortcomings and all.

Android is kind of the worst of both worlds. It's fast as fuck and everything is open and free and you can do pretty much everything a control freak would want to do to their phone, BUT the UI was obviously built by nerds with no concept of either usability design OR aesthetics deign.

HTC sense on my android is brilliant. I'd compare it to when I had my iBook way back when in terms of usability--more as phone markets > pc/mac installs. I think HTC sense won awards or something though. Not sure about stock Android. Could be a piece of shit for all I know.
