delay effects are not about EQ or filtering !

flanger starts to bridge the gap, but no way you're doing delay with some EQ

time domain, frequency domain, blather yada.

I don't think that's what he was asking. I think he was just asking if EQ and filtering can be used interchangeably. (But if that was what you meant, MJ, hahathhat is right.)

why would i talk about delays??

simple question

simple answer

thanks

lol just re-read the thread and don«t get where hathathat did get idea about delays trough eq and filt, geez wtf

There's no self oscillating equalizers around as far as I know, dudes.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

I remember back when I was using Reason I was really fond of routing the outs from a drum source into the comb filter on the maelstrom, automating the frequency and resonance parameters. A really low frequency and a medium resonance creates a really dirty sound, similar to what you might get with a very short delay with a long decay, or a properly manipulated flange.

I love the fact that things like that are able to be done with Reason, and it's as easy as pressing Tab and fucking around. I learned a lot from Reason.

It's a great program for experimenting, I definitely learned a lot using it.

Lots of layering, EQ an filtering to get things to fit together and punch. Amp and filter Envelopes are really helpful. compression and limiting a little bit maybe.. getting things to sound proper first. Fun stuff is different..

Stacked comb filters, Phased FM effects, Lots of resampling, Big reverts into HPfilters makes me smile. Gratuitous time stretching.

TBH though it's all about having a good sound to start with...

Current fav is recording jams with time stretch and Spectral freeze effects. Go silly with the controls. Then open back up as a wav, slice and edit the bits you like. Get really nice grainy sounds if you time stretch a snare to about 15 seconds, save as a wav, and then piss about with pitch envelopes.

Also, stereo offset programming can make stuff interesting.

Got some interesting snare effects by setting up my monitor aimed out of the window, and a stereo pair of condenser mics at the end of the garden, about 20 meters away.

Just try everything, some things will be shit, some things will be cool. Just keep a mental note of what worked well, and what kind of sound it made. Some little things get used all the time, some only when I can be bothered to do all the mess about for that one FFSSHHHZZZWAAAP effect that's kinda cool sometimes..

but I think half the deal with getting interesting drum sounds is not only what you do to the sound, but what made it in the first place.

this is true. some of my best snares were made from machinery noises, sneezes, tapping on random objects etc.

  • 1 month later...

I have this machine called 808. It contains preformed drum sounds. I like how it mixes them together so I use this port called 'mono out'.

I record this into my computer, the beats I mean. Then I apply a concoction of compression and EQ algorythms until I like the boom POP TSSSSSSS.

Guest tht tne

truc is a cool vst that has a few "instant dub" patches iirc

you can complain about presets but it's all about having fun

also try audiodamage automaton & smartelectronix livecut

those are good for beginners but you can develop with them

& smartelectronix sloper, mda subsynth, tobybear madshifta
