Should I start collecting vinyl?

Recommended Posts

I'm actually looking for someone to take 4-5 crates off my hands before I move again. Two crates are packed with good Detroit techno, acid, etc...

Do any of you guys clean your own vinyl? I've bought some "new" records which appear a bit dirty and definitely sound overly poppy and scuffy. I can fully accept the crackle, but when it actually invades the music I'm sure there's something up. I've got a non-static velvet pad thing which helps with collecting any dust but just interested to know if there's any DIY methods for cleaning your records.

I'd like some advice on this, too. My copy of the Smojphace EP has a bit of dust on it (heh, Near Mint my arse) and I think I should get it properly clean before I play it.

Dust can be a bit of a bother but it doesn't mean it ain't near mint. Just give it a clean.

we used some kind of anti-static gun in the laboratory to weight in substances, the guy who bought it told me you could use it to clean lps too, the dirt would just fall off. But it could be a pain in the arse to clean a whole lp with this gun, since it only has an effect in small spots.

I got a text from oscillik earlier. He's been lurking in the rafters of Craig Anderson's bus garage waiting for the right time to strike.

the imagery of this post is intense. i can see the rafters

I could see the blond spikes of his hair behind a trashcan.

One part domestos, one part water. Use a scouring pad of the washing up type, apply with the sponge side and then lift the dirt out with the scouring side. Leave it to dry in the sun. Be careful not to get the bleach on the label.

clean with rubbing alcohol and an anti static.. flannel cloth

rub in circles the way the groove goes... let it dry off totally. i mean really wait, even if it feels dry

best way to do it

i means philips rca. i got them confused the orig discwash made by discwasher inc is good but they said the new one (RCA) is bad according to amazon

ps the ebay link is the bad on

I'm addicted to buying CDs. It's completely impractical and I would not recommend buying physical releases to anyone when digital is so much cheaper, easier to store, and doesn't eat up our planet's resources. If you're not already hooked on being a record/CD consumer, don't start! It's a fool's endeavor. I'm at the point now where I couldn't possibly listen to everything I own within the course of a few years. I'm approaching a kind of CD collecting singularity.... it's totally out of control! I need help. Don't follow my example. If I were to do the same with Vinyl, I would be reduced to prostituting myself on the streets in order to support my habit.

You're a little late. Since I started this thread, I got these on vinyl:

Brimful of Asha

Gantz Graf

Smojphace EP

Chiastic Slide

Koyaanisqatsi

Digeridoo (original Belgian pressing. Yeah...)

I got one of these at my local record shop, seems to work ok. I actually just use the fluid with my old discwasher brush.

And yeah the new imitation "discwasher" is absolute garbage. the brush is a completely different fabric, the solution has changed, i wouldn't go near it.

Nope. You need an amp or something capable of eq'ing the signal back to normal, otherwise it will always be quiet.

Could you go into any more detail on why it would not work? Isn't it as simple as making the signal louder?

Yeah, it needs to be re-eq'd as all the bass frequencies on the vinyl are attenuated (or more accurately the signal is eq'd according to the standard RIAA curve).

I've heard about that. A phono stage is required to recover the bass frequencies of the signal.

I found a decent headphone amplifier on eBay, which has a bass boost function. Would this be adequate? As far as I know, a phono stage just applies an equalization with heavy bass. Yes, there is an exact, RIAA-standard EQ, but I'm sure the EQ of this bass boost would be very similar.

Ooh no, it will certainly be a step in the right direction but you'll end up with something rather peculiarly EQ-d. Just get a normal phono amp with the RIAA curve and everything will end up sounding like it should rather than you having to botch together a counter EQ curve. For reference here's what you're fighting against...

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Aha, well, it's all over now then. Welcome to the dark side. You're off to a very good start, I must say. I've been thinking about grabbing the Koyaanisqatsi soundtrack myself. But that's because I have a sickness.

surely it's better than collecting porcelain doggies. Although both sit on a shelf behind glass. heh. So maybe you're right.

It's definitely less pretentious to collect porcelain doggies

I just want to get rid of them. None of it is on discogs because I'm too lazy. Just pick a time, come over and sift through and see if you want them.

The only condition is they go as a lot. I'm not piecing them out.
