Guest arcanum
Yeah, Chromakey Dreamcoat... That sounds nothing like the Tycho track. Both have guitar, but they're so different. If you had posted Hey Saturday Sun, it would at least be a little closer. Still at all similar though. It's just a bad example. karmakramer
yeah I think it is easy for us to get caught up with our perceptions and then sharing them as truths. uniqueness is important but I don't think it is the basis for honesty. I have fallen to this trap, in this thread and elsewhere and it is mostly irrational and a waste of time and energy. encouragement of creativity will lead to new things in time. the process of how someone decides to go about fueling their drive, is personal and ultimately fine. tycho sounds honest about himself so pat on the back (: Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/65132-tycho-visuals/page/8/#findComment-1559318 Share on other sites

I though it was watmm). In any case, I find all his stuff - graphic design, music - good, but too polished. Very commercial, if not cynical. I think it's the fact that he's commercializing an aesthetic that is supposed to be anti-commercial that is the most galling aspect. BoC (or at least their image) is about shunning the spotlight and making very personal art in a non-commercial way (and needless to say, the popular movements in the 60s and 70s were about personal freedom which had an element of anti-commercialism). Yet Tycho seems to be all about self-promotion and slickness. IF you can get past this, and just focus on the music, then none of the rest really matters. Personally, I think while his music had become less-BoC like over time, it has become more repetitive, self-referential, and plain boring. It sounds to me like he's still repeating the musical ideas from his first album, just refining them a bit. I think the Flashbulb comparison is pretty spot-on. If you think BoC's work (or Scott's for that matter) is anti-commercial, then you really need to open your eyes - both are a reflection and celebration of commercial design and an esthetic that ran through the mid 70's and 80's that defined a period of time in both music and graphic design where the electronification of music started changing how it sounded and introduced new ideas into the mainstream. My question would be, what are you using as a reference point? I haven't released any significant body of work in over 6 years. Haters think that you're pulling a BOC maneuver with the wait d: Scott, I find your music to be very pleasing and I don't blame you a single bit for being influenced in any way by BOC. They have released some truly touching music, yet sadly I have seen many voice their negative reactions to BOC just as people are voicing about yours. Not trying to make the direct comparison between your music and theirs, just trying to say that some people out there aren't going to be into the same things that you're into artistically - and that is a good thing! I feel bad for people who get so caught up in extra information that they reshape their listening experience before even lending their ears to the music. I am excited for your new album! Definitely let us know. Also I would love to see a post of all your skate/surf paraphernalia (: Cheers Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/65132-tycho-visuals/page/8/#findComment-1559639 Share on other sites
apriorion
Alright, now I'm slightly sorry for my outrage earlier. At least he's acknowledging the influence. I was under the impression that he dodged that question, which casts doubt on the originality of his thinking. I still have some of those doubts, honestly, and it's not just because of warbly synths sounds. It's the whole package. Given that he is a fairly thoughtful guy, I'm sure he could push his ideas in a way that would mark his own distinctive path. Thus far, from what I see (and given the points the OP mentioned), I think there's still too much retreading on familiar ground. Look, I understand that neither surf aesthetic nor nature documentary are owned by BoC as part of an artistic project, but there just has to be a different way to accomplish this that doesn't feel so BoCish. I'm sorry that there isn't something more precise to say in the way of criticism, but the overlap is just apparent. sheatheman
Lets quickly approach this somewhat resolved problem from a theoretical perspective. Tycho's music is almost strictly diatonic, and I find it much more aligned with Helios' sound compositionally. The song on the video from the OP operates on 4 5 6 and 2 chords. Off the top of my head I can't think of a single BoC song that is diatonic, (for those that don't know, only using the notes that compose the major scale). BoC often uses counter motion as well as parallel 7th chords and so on. A hallmark of the BoC sound for me that this forum seems to have always missed is their persistent use of heptatonia secunda, which contains modes such as ascending melodic minor, melodic major, and the Acoustic Scale This combination of notes has equally as much to do the mysterious, ghostly nostalgia associated with BoC as their sound aesthetic. "Left Side Drive" is a good example of heptatonia secunda in their music. lo-fi
I love the visuals and the song......very much looking forward to his new album.
