Autechre Otomata - Flash-based generative sequencer

Otomata is a generative sequencer. It employs a cellular automaton type logic I’ve devised to produce sound events.

 

Each alive cell has 4 states: Up, right, down, left. at each cycle, the cells move themselves in the direction of their internal states. If any cell encounters a wall, it triggers a pitched sound whose frequency is determined by the xy position of collision, and the cell reverses its direction. If a cell encounters another cell on its way, it turns itself clockwise.

 

This set of rules produces chaotic results in some settings, therefore you can end up with never repeating, gradually evolving sequences. Go add some cells, change their orientation by clicking on them, and press play, experiment, have fun.

As a fan of Autechre, I can squeeze a lot of fun out of this. It's similar to ToneMatrix, but the music you create is based on a generative process.

It's a shame you can't have different sounds on each cell as there's very little variation to the type of melody you can make with it. My piece pretty much sounded exactly as yours did and I expect others will too.

yeah this is cool but it's got about 2 mins of entertainment value and then it's pointless. no matter how hard you try to make it different, sequences will just be more busy or more minimal than any other.

This is way too fun.

I think this is the most notes you can have going on at once, while still having a repeating sound loop.

err not to be too much of a pedantic prick at 9 in the morning, but that's a 4 note progression, not a 4 chord progression. It is pretty though :)
