Record store day

How did it go out there folks?

Any good records bagged? Waste of time? A wall of hipsters who needed to be nuked (Rough Trade Brick Lane :whistling: )

I always work saturday morning so don't really get the chance to go. I guess the money I loose on not working plus travelling expenses it would cost the same amount if the records turn up on Discogs. Plus I hate crowds lol.

Trip reports please..

2 places participate in it in nottingham, both right next to each other. Picked one que (because this shop had the bibio/clark split), waited for an hour and a half queuing, didn't get the split. :(

I did get a couple of 7s tho (haven't brought 7s in ages) siriusmo/elen split and moon duo.

Pretty good overall but gotta get there (even) earlier next time to get the stuff I really want.

100% success, thankfully.

Bibio/Clark split 12"

Supercollider 12"

Cosmogramma Alt Takes 12"

Came to just under £30. Got to my local in Norwich at just before 8, there were a few hipster at the front of the queue, I wasn't too far behind though and got talking to some nice geezers behind me in the queue which passed the time nicely til opening time at 10. In hindsight I wish I'd picked up the 10" reissue of The Queen Is Dead and maybe the New Order/Joy Div Ceremony 12". I'm heading into Norwich again, going to check if there any pickings left, but I doubt there'll be owt worth having.

Enjoyed it today, but then I got the three records I went for. If I hadn't I probably would've been sulking too much to post this smug waffle.

Radioheads Butcher/Collider is on Discogs already. For 95 english pounds!

What incenntive is there for this Record Store Day when traders can hold back their stock and sell it a massive profit on Discogs? Thats why I am sceptical about getting sucked into this RSD, part of me thinks it's a massive con.

If I had a store 5 mins away and I knew the bloke running the shop, then I'd go.

Half of me thinks it's really cool, half of me gets really pissed off by it. Sure, the exclusive releases are cool, but nearly all of it seemed massively overpriced, deliberately scarce, and even pointless - what's the point of releases that are readily available normally on a green 10" for 30% more money? They've created this ridiculous situation where they can do and charge seemingly what they want and people go crazy for it. My housemate got to a shop at 7 and picked up some bits and bobs, fairly jealous of some of it, but basically something about the actual practicalities of RSD irk me.

I did what I usually did at the weekend and went to some of my locals and had the usual chats and bought about £50 of stuff, that would of happened RSD or no RSD

Kinda bummed I missed out at the one here in Austin, TX. My friend just bought some old records, but he ran into Sam Calagione, who owns Dogfish Head Brewery, and drank some free booze.

I went to one of the participating places this afternoon in Soho and managed to get the Bibo/Clark split and the Jónsí EP, went to a second to get the Radiohead single but it was packed, went all the way to the Notting Hill store but they'd sold out within an hour of opening the store.

Still I got 2 out of the 3 things I wanted so that's not too bad !

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

If you think that's the case with your independent shop owners then you really need to get in touch with the organisers. My local shop had loads of shit last year over stuff like this. Don't honestly know whether it was true or not, but today he had loads of releases in and a good few copies too. It seemed it had all been done fairly and squarely to me anyway.

I do agree with Solo Strike, a lot of the records are overpriced. The titles I bought I was happy to buy at the price I did. Generally speaking I wouldn't bother queuing and paying through the nose for actual tracks that I didn't already own just to have a special RSD issue. I would've made an exception for The Queen Is Dead as I've nostalgic memories of buying the original album on the day it was released from my then local independent record shop. It was sold out when I went back anyway, so I just bought the new John Foxx and The Maths album instead.

(EDIT) Maybe I'm naive, but it'd be nice if this sort of thing reminded a lot of people that they actually HAVE independent record retailers where they live. Honestly, how many people across the country today do you think had returned to their local indie for the first time in, oooh, about 12 months...?

Oh, yea, it's definitely overpriced. One of the 7s i brought today cost £8! For 2 tracks!

Yeah, that's fucking steep. But then again last week I paid nearly a fiver apiece for the two new Ghost Box 7"s, which seem far from limited. I suppose it's hard to complain about records being overpriced if you'll still cough up the asking price (which I do all too often btw, please don't think I'm flaming you there).

Loads of it seemed overpriced to me, housemate bought some Sonic Youth 5 track tour EP thing for £17, crazy steep.

Saying that, I did buy on my "slightly rebelling against RSD shopping spree" a 12" for £9, so I suppose I'm being slightly hypocritical - although I'd say 90% of releases today seemed a bit costly. And that 12" I bought had this monster of a tune on it, and there was no way I could leave it in the shop

I think next year it would be fairer to offer regular customers first dibs on the limited. Get a reward card points thing together, get £500 for a year on it and have first selection on the superlimited, as opposed to the equivelent of ticket touts who get up at 4am to snaffle all the black gold to put on doucheBay

i didn't end up getting any of the actual rsd-related releases, but i did get a bunch of other random stuff for sale prices.

U2 - Please (single)

Cadence Weapon - Breaking Kayfabe

Presidents Of The USA - Peaches & Live (JPN single) (lol)

Prince & The Revolution - Around The World In A Day

Boards - Peel Session

i'm sure you guys find the above list just thrilling.

the stores around here try and have performances on rsd—some dudes were rapping at me while i was perusing the used bin, kinda weird. also there was free pizza.

I didn't get any exclusives, but I got the SMM: Context compilation released pretty recently on Ghostly for the meager sum of 25 dollars.

Actually dat shit's limited to 800 copies, so I guess it's pretty exclusive

Would have liked to get the Radiohead 12", but I forgot about it and didn't go early enough. Actually didn't even think about looking for it when I was at the store, I'm sure I would have seen it if there were any left. Got the Bibio/Clark though. Not that I have a record player. :whistling:

Ugh just annoying annoying annoying

Why make things in a pressing of only a few hundred copies deliberately when the demand is clearly going to outweigh the supply by such a stupidly high margin?? It doesn't make me want to buy more records, just lament the fact that people are so prepared to bow down to the market of the collectable

SO many amazing records are pressed in quantities of less than 300 all year round, not as a result of making things limited on purpose, but as a result as that is all the general public is prepared to buy.... and so many people don't pay attention to them. Record Dave Grohl farting on a diet of Taco Bell for 40 minutes however and people will suddenly sell their first born to own it on poop coloured 9" if it's released on the right day with the right stcker on the front cover

Drunk, apologies

Yesterday was great, got everything I wanted that wasn't at a ridiculous price (the Ed Banger boxed set was £36-£40 for FIVE TRACKS WTF? and the New Order/Joy Division 12" was £15 wherever I went, that's just too much) so yeah, I'm happy:

12":

Villagers - Live at the Workman's Club, Dublin

Foals - Metropolis Session

Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma Alt Takes (kinda disappointed with this so I might eBay it... not sure yet)

Franz Ferdinand - Covers E.P. (orange vinyl)

Radiohead - Supercollider/The Butcher (labels are the wrong way round heh)

The Art of Noise - Into Battle & Worship (heavy blue vinyl)

7":

Charlotte Gainsbourg/Villagers - Memoir/Set The Tigers Free

The Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar/Bitch/Let It Rock

Beck/Bat For Lashes - Let's Get Lost/Dark Time (Demo)

Echo & the Bunnymen - The Killing Moon/Do It Clean

Arctic Monkeys - Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair/Brick By Brick (will probably eBay it...)

Metronomy - The Look/Picking Up For You

I also ended up buying DAF's "Alles Ist Gut" on vinyl for £3 and the 7" of Japan's "Nightporter" for £1 - I've been looking for this for ages seeing as both tracks are different versions to those on the album and haven't been released anywhere else :D

All in all I spent exactly £100 on RSD releases, then an extra £9 on some other stuff. I'm very happy... but I won't be buying any more music for a while.

Oh, and the Ed Banger boxed set is currently on eBay for £200-£500. Cannot believe it.

I was wondering about that, would've picked it up if I'd seen it. Apparently there's unreleased stuff on there? Is there very much, and is it the customary variations of Beat Box and Moments In Love? (I love Into Battle, btw).
