question to UK foreigners

Recommended Posts

Guest mohamed

hello

has anybody on watmm ever left his/her country of origin to go living in london? for no particular reason? and no particular money?

im looking to read if theres people who have been able to adapt with an ability there, with reasonable times and conditions.

i think that if someone really like a place and wants to stay there, he can do it. but i never really moved so i don't know.

i know only about people who haven't been able to stay there for more than a certain period only

but i can't say i have something to share with them

Do you have a job or family to go to, or are you getting an holiday visa. Or does your country have a work visa program for under-25s with Britain.

If none of these, perhaps you shouldn't illegally immigrate to the UK. It's illegal.

Yeah I'm moving to the UK in about a month. Getting it all set up has been a hell of a learning experience. Unfortunately I don't have much in the way of stories for you right now though, but I'll post back once I've actually moved and gotten myself settled and whatnot.

Which country are you from? If it's EU/EEA, then no problem (for most countries). There's currently a highly publicised political debate about non-EU migration, with the Cons stated aim to reduce immigration drastically.

i'm not planning to move, i was looking for stories of people who moved and found a job that is not mcdonald, a bit nearer to their work experience and nearer to everyone with a bit of self care. and make a day by the lone fact of living up there. i'm from milan. when i come there, i'm entertained at every angle.

yes i do have a fair bit of money

In that case I know lots of EU migrants, in a pretty wide range of jobs, but none in mcjobs as such, although a couple work in retail and aren't particularly happy. All the non EU migrants I know are highly qualified graduates earning a very decent wage (sponsored by their companies although none are doing jobs that a UK graduate with a few years experience couldn't do). London is by far and away the most cosmopolitan city on the planet, which has its pluses and minuses. I've lived in New York and it doesn't come close.

I suppose that really depends more on what industry you are in or want to be in. If you're not qualified for something or have little experience you are as likely as we are to end up in a bad job as anyone who was born here. Personally I wouldn't want to make a big move to another country unless I had enough experience that I would be confident about getting a job in my area, because that's how you might end up with a McJob for longer than you would like. Maybe check some job adverts for whatever you do, if you fill all the criteria then that's a good sign. Apart from that there is nothing especially hard about living in London and it's not exactly exclusive.

pretty cool description. that comes close to the situation i happen to be. i think i could seek for sponsorship if wanted due to 10 ys working in the same field (color), same company. i have a diploma in graphic arts, but i got old with photoshop and stuff. i reached the point where they can trust me doing post production to fashion photography, not by taking orders by the prick above me but by talking with the chick that was at the location and trying to replicate her feelings of light and perception at the moment of shoot. cool experience, direct communication. i became able to choose whats beautiful and whats not into a small domain, just by working. the last thing i learned is to do a digital magazine for iPad. the shit change, but the methods are always the same.

budget at least £600 per month for rent. at least. this will get you a half decent room in a shared house. if you want your own place, a 1 bed flat is circa £800 per month. there are better deals to be had I am sure, but you might have to move to stabsville in east london.

In brighton the norm seems to be about 400-450 pcm, bills included. I'm going to try to get a job selling mobile phones because I have experience with it and the commission it would bring in would allow me to live quite comfortably. Failing that I have call center experience, and failing that I have video rental store experience (sinking ship), and failing that I have restaurant experience too so that could be a temporary plan B if all other options get exhausted. As long as I get the hours I won't care what I'm doing at least for the first little while.

An extra £200 booze money in my pocket each month makes it well worth it.

Plus you get to see your house when Eastenders comes on.

Mate, I've got a lovely room in a house share for £380 pcm. Shit's crazy, if you look in the right places you can get good prices.

The rent is a bit surprising to me—£600-800 for a room in London? Not that I can compare at all, but I thought $1000 for a studio apt (or flat—lol) in a disenfranchised section of Brooklyn was bad.

btw. my girlfriend and i are currently planning a 10 or 11-day trip to london for march/april—expect a "what should i do/visit/experience in london as a tourist" thread in the next month or so.
