I have one of these, haven't used it much yet. I need a few more SIDs inside it (it handles 8).

Perhaps you'd like to hear my experiments?

Holy fuck that looks sick as fuck!

I have a C64 at home and have always wanted to utilize the sid chip but don't have a clue where to start.

For Raster Noton fans, a demo written in 23 bytes (the entire source code being - 7C 00 05 A2 29 3F A8 E5 A1 45 A2 05 A2 29 7F 99 00 D4 99 D7 CF 50 EB ). There's some well nice sounds in there -

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

I don't think I've ever heard a SID track emulating strings before until I discovered this one a few weeks ago. The Follin brothers do some ace stuff -

As a straight c64 emulator possibly HOX64 as it does all kinds of cycle accurate shenanigans - http://www.hoxs64.net/

For specifically playing back .sids at darn near identical quality, there's SidPlay 2.6 which since the 2.5 versions has included various filter distortion tricks to really bump up the authenticity of playback - http://noname.c64.org/csdb/release/?id=103781

And for a huge .zip of .sids head to the HVSC collection - http://www.hvsc.de/players.htm#download

i just wanted to make music with this palette of sounds, isn't there a vst or something out there?

there's more than one sid/chip? maybe i'm not following... :\

Oh, you want to make SID like sounds ... well at the top level you've got something like Hardsid but down at a free VSTi level you've got Basic 64 -

EDIT: Which now appears to have become renamed Basic 65 and is unfortunately no longer freeware

But yeah there were two chips - the earlier 6581 and the later 8580 model which supposedly fixed bugs though unfortunately earlier composers used those bugs for some of their tracks (mainly for sample playback) which meant later models of the C64 didn't quite reproduce the tracks as the author intended.

As in various .sid files (the most common file format that c64 songs have been saved onto)
