Nice! I really love that synth. Very simple but I'm not a synth geek so It fits most of my needs and sounds absolutely awesome. If only it would have a lfo...

I'll bug him about it.

Hardware - A toss between my Shruthi-1 and my Juno-60, but I dream of someday owning an sh-101 (almost considered trading my Juno for one)

I've been swithering about a Shruthi-1 for a while. I like the idea and the sounds I've heard from it but I've been unsure about building one. How easy is it to build? Would you say it's easy enough for someone who's never soldered in their life?

It's not a particularly difficult project, but it does get a bit involved. I know there are people who have successfully completed shruthi's with little to no soldering or electronics experience, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's definitely a step above a beginner project. I'd try building some simpler, cheaper stuff first before tackling the Shruthi-1. The biggest problem with Shruthi-1 is if you make a mistake somewhere, and don't have the first clue about electronics, it could be a nightmare to debug. That's an expensive paperweight.

I'd keep the Juno 60 over an SH101 any day!

I don't understand the extreme 101 love, either.

^

layout is awesome, synth is flexible, just sounds good. 100 note seq. I wish it was polyphonic that would be class.

I think the sliders are key.

fast lfo also

stays in tune

small and portable

again, just sounds good.

i wish the waldorf pulse had the 101's interface instead of flaky knobs and matrix editing.

edit: flakey ? flac'y?

flake + y

Right, but the 202 does all those things. And has a superior sequencer. And is smaller and more portable.

Help me understand!

I really like the keyboard on the 101. 202 doesn't have that, though it's seq is supieror.

I like that i can hit load, play a long ass melody on full size keys. press load, press play, and tweak the lfo and whole synth.

It's just fun.

I dunno if a battle between he 101 and 202 is significant or not. They are quite similar. I've never had a 202 but wouldn't kick it out of bed for sure.

I'd spend more time playing the 101 though b/c I like playing a lot better than step sequencing (i know you can play the tiny buttons on the 202)

Extra lfo waveforms on 101 are nice too. They are are very useful.

Yeah, that's why I never traded it. I really think I would be happier right now with the sh101, but I know I would be kicking myself someday if I let go of the Juno60. Unfortunately, it's in need of repairs for the time being anyway. Such is the problem with owning old hardware.

does no one likes the real charm of the 101? The wonderful warm fruity filter with an oozing M&S resonance that gives a very juicy bass end response better the earlier SH-2/System700 series filters?

It's a shame it's made of shitty 80's plastic tho but the keytar thing is cool and ghey and the same time.

sadly waaaaay too overpriced these days imho

software:

reaktor 5 - my most used ensemble is SoapOpera6. It is a nice sounding emulation of siel's opera6 and I use it way too much.

pianoteq - this is the only other vsti that i use regularly.

cableguys curve - I played around with the demo for a couple of weeks and was really impressed by the sound of this synth. great filters.

hardware:

telemark - this has been my favorite for about a year. It's one of those synths that just sounds good and you don't have to do much to get a great sound. it's limited but good. My only issue with it is that it doesn't have a power on/off button.

I've owned a 101, 202, sh2 and system 100 101. I found the sh2 to be the best of the lot, and don't agree with the comment that the 101/202 can out bass an sh2.

a 101 is also around 200 quid cheaper than a 202

what's the 202 pitch bend like? (assuming it has one) i like the 101's a lot. very flexible/nifty.

edit: i thought you were on about the SH-2, d'oh!

but the MC-202? well it has no keys for a start and is a pain in the ass/fiddly to program! + no pitch bend.

Edited by sirch

in my honest professional opinion.

the 101 is better then a 303.

but them together is a different beast all together. limitless.

*also the mc-202 is pretty shit. but if u got a 101 there is no real need for it.

if you compare an SH101 and SH-2 side by side with a simple bass patch the filter resonance is lost a little more on the SH-2 in the lower cutoff area then on the 101 which is the point I'm making

as far as VCO's go the SH-2 wins hands down for richness

Hardware: Shruthi-1. Finally got it working, it took me months because I was soldering like a moron and let my frustration get the best of me. This thing sounds so good, it's like the hybrid digital/analog thing the SQ80 I used to have was shooting for, but simultaneously rawer, smoother, punchier, fatter, tighter. It's also my first monosynth... I really, really like this way of jamming/constructing melodies, much better than polysynths or tracking. It just feels so damn good. Music hasn't been this much fun in a long time.

Software: FM7. Sounds so good and so clean w/ awesome MIDI control. Also I like how it extends the shelf life of my TX81Z patches.

The only thing about these I don't like is I wish both had a drum mode. Fortunately the Shruthi is open-source, so theoretically I could modify it.

I still lust for a Nord Lead 2 and a Monomachine. I thought the Shruthi would cure my MnM lust but now that I'm getting acquainted with the monophonic mindset, it has only made the lust worse. Much, much worse.
