George was my favorite by a million miles, and then John a million miles ahead of Ringo, and fuck Paul.

edit: only sort of joking

without paul there'd be no george as we know him.

not joking at all.

Personally I think Harrison had a bunch of great songs but not on the level of Lennon and McCartney.

I do not agree with you.

They all had rejected songs from the last few years that came out after they broke up. Harrison was the first one to leave, for about a week, and then came back. I think since they were all disagreeing and historically Lennon and McCartney had written most of the songs before it wasn't really the time for Harrison to start trying to get more songs in. There are clips on the Let It Be film of Paul being fairly condescending to George, and of John having a massive whinge about Maxwell's Silver Hammer being shit, which it obviously isn't. It's bizarre how unhappy they were with Abbey Road.

i'd be curious to see that vid. i read paul mccartney's official bio, "many years from now" and it claims maxwell's silver hammer as mccartney's song, going into the meaning of the weird lyric, "Joan was quizzical, studied 'petaphysical." 90% sure it's not not George's song. it Paul's!

my understanding, largely based on this book and interviews i've read on the net, is thus: lennon & mccartney were a songwriting TEAM, they were since they were little lads. it was their dream, and they worked on it amazingly fucking hard. each album had at least one song for every band member (as some fans liked george, others ringo, others paul), but lennon & mccartney got the lion's share. lennon & mccartney 7/10, george 2/10, ringo 1/10. as they eased up on touring, there was more time for writing, and george had more to say. lennon & mccartney refused, starting a lot of fights. on top of that, lennon got on smack and mccartney tried to take up the slack, but that just made him seem like a control freak. ringo was like, whatever.

i've not really heard much of his solo stuff. i quite like "here comes the sun" though. very gentle and warm.

Yes, I know.

Alternate response: that was the real Paul, before he was replaced by a humongous twat.

Maxwell's Silver Hammer is Paul's song, I didn't mean to imply it wasn't.

You simplified a lot of stuff there but I can't really pull you up on any of it particularly. If you can find the Let It Be film I recommend it, but I think Paul doesn't want it released.

a lot of you guys need to re-listen to martha my dear, i will, and mother nature's son. paul knows what the fuck he is doing.

I love george, and his songs are great, but his "tortured" ones aren't as good as john's and his "pop" ones don't really match up with paul's. There are a lot of gems tho.

paul can write a hell of a melody, and was probably the most musically talented of the beatles. but lennon summed up what was wrong with him better than i could; he was very vocal with his hatred of 'ob-la-di ob-la-da', dismissing it as "paul's granny shit".

also he was excessively fond of parallel fourths in his basslines (i.e. when i'm sixty-four) - i really wish he didn't do that, it makes him sound like a fucking german oompah band.

i love this thread. I'm a huge Beatles lover but for some reason, in all these years I have been listening, they seem to be the one band that I don't overthink or scrutinize to high hell. it's always been a mystery to me as to why they are the only ones who get a free pass from my never ending scrutiny but they do and I enjoy that.

Guest sirch

probably already been said but "Here Comes the Sun" is a great one too.

i also like... that one off Let it Be, that i can't remember the name of...

"because you're sweet and lovely.. i love you.."

you know the one :)

..but "Within You Without You" is by far his best! imho. fucking classic.

the beatles, for me, are musical purity. they were revolutionary and innovative before those words really had any meaning within popular music. anything that came after which had original studio techniques, it was easy to accuse of ripping off the beatles. but with the fab four, you can't do that. you can't accuse them of ripping off a lot of stuff simply because they invented (or at least massively popularised, pedants) a lot of those techniques. for pop music with an experimental slant, they were year zero.

and i think even after close to twenty years of listening, that's why they remain fresh for me.
