Guest tompty
the problem with christians is that they pick and choose what is relevant to them from the bible. If the Bible is Gods word, who are you, a mere mortal, to question any single section of it "Any person who curseth his mother or father, must be killed. (Leviticus 20:9) " "If anyone, even your own family suggests worshipping another God, kill them. (Deuteronomy 13:6-10)" etc etc That what I usually ask to nutjobs trying to push their religion on me. They always come out with " well it has to be put into context", does it? Then how come so much of it that you choose does not get put into context. keltoi
On 5/29/2011 at 4:59 AM, nene multiple assgasms said: the last time I had missionaries or whatever knock on my door, it was an older man and a younger woman. why do they always operate in pairs? safety? anyway, the guy did all the talking. he asked me if I was a bible reader, and I said yes. he also asked me what I thought about all the wars and disasters happening in the world, and I said it was the same stuff that's always been going on. a little while later, he asks what I believed, and I told him I was an atheist. he said how unusual it was that I was a bible reader who was an atheist. he laid the watchmaker analogy on me, which I destroyed by pointing out that we know that watchmakers make watches, but there's no similar knowledge of gods making universes or people. he then tried to make a similar point about how complex a space shuttle is compared to the brain or something. he asked me if I had ever seen a space shuttle being made, and I told him that I had probably seen one being made on tv at one time or another. that was about when he said goodbye. this old guy came up to me at an interior design exhibition where the company i work for had a display. he asked what i did and when i said 'designer' he went off on the old watchmaker for over 10 minutes of some prepared monologue before i could get a word in and tell him he's wasting my time and his. i wished him good luck with his crusade. delet...
Yeah, because like all religions, no matter the initial text, they break up into sects, whom hold some sacred understanding that reveals to it's followers some sort of higher level beyond that which the mere shallow non initiated plebs understand. Eventually if this splinter group gets popular enough, it will also splinter. It's the religious fractal principle that i just invented. Open copyright by me. delet...
mm yes, it is the least followed dictum. But how can people who's founding fathers, shunned the learning of rome, remember glass, and it's negative possibilities where defence is concerned. I say rome as a placeholder for learning. Not as a place folder for burning. Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide all signatures A member of the non sequitairiate. murve33
I always run into Mormons at the city I go to school in. Every time we end up talking about a Mormon I went to school with. Then we just talk, I tell him I'm an Agnostic Atheist and my reasoning, he realizes converting me is a lost cause, we talk some more, and then we're off. They're always polite as hell. Jehovah's Wittnesses on the other hand, just won't give up. Guest hahathhat
i went to high school in a city, and when we'd go to lunch there would sometimes be some christians on the street trying to convert people. arguing with them was something many people did with their lunchbreak.... my personal tac probably wouldn't surprise anyone here. i go for a combination of logic and non-sequiturs. probably the best line i ever came up with was, "Can God write a rock so heavy, even He cannot play it?" it sounds identical to one that gets thrown at them all the time, and they start to parrot off a prepared answer. but then it hits them that i said something else, and the gears come to a screeching halt... a sentence abandoned three words in and a furrowed brow. then they'd smile, laugh, tell me to have a nice day, and go bother someone else. these days i really don't give a shit. there are more entertaining arguments to be found elsewhere (hi WATMM!) Guest hahathhat
being with jesus must be very comforting. allows you wall off a lot of the world's drama. don't worry about anything, 'cos it's all part of god's plan, and you're with god. understandable someone would get upset when you try and steal their jesus security blanket. for those deeply entrenched, losing jesus might be like withdrawing from benzodiazepines. kaini
i used live with a welsh midget (well, not technically a midget, but he was 4'11" tall) in holland. he was raised by jehovah's witnesses and basically said 'fuck that' to the religion at 18. and coincidentally the town i lived in (zandvoort) seemed to be swarming with them. it was always a lol, because when they knocked i'd send him out to talk to them. so, picture jehovah's witnesses speaking dutch being angrily shouted at by a midget speaking english in the thickest welsh accent imaginable, which was utterly incomprehensible to them. shit never got old.
