you sure it's not a downgrade? good price though, I'll give them that.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

Fucking apps, fucking iWindows

Ugh. As an IT guy who's having trouble enough getting clients to move onto Windows 7 I don't need a new Windows OS specifically targetted at a consumer demographic to come and fuck things up.

Over a year ago already? Fucking hell.

Yeah, that low price is surprising. They're really trying to make people snap this up I guess.

This isn't even the worst thing... the worst thing, and this is only really applicable if you're in IT.. is that they're making Server 2012 have the metro interface. Words cannot describe...

They're getting desperate if they're pricing it at 40USD - they must know people won't adopt it willingly due to Metro UI, so they're trying to "give" it away in the hopes the masses adopt based on price.

This is also for the "pro" version - what's gimped in it I wonder versus their typical "super awesome ultimate Ballmer-ized" version?

They're putting Metro UI on Windows Server 2012!?!? Way to alienate their core consumers (aka corporate and IT)

To be honest, I understand it. Standardizing their interfaces throughout their range.

If in a few years a kid gets into IT and he's accustomed to Metro and then sees the old fashioned interface it would probably put them off and confuse them.

However metro is a disorganised mess and I know where everything currently is on the server OS's... So for me it's a complete cunt.

It makes sense... if their UI made sense. Also, something consumer-driven shouldn't be forced down the throats of professionals.

Apple always has... I don't think they've ever charged more than 130USD for OS X, and recently, I don't think more than 70USD.

well, a company that only commands about avg. 8-10% of the market for operating systems (compared to Microsoft's avg 80%) i don't think they could demand more and still get it. people just don't want it on their desktops or laptops.

Really? If anything, I would think the opposite - since Apple has a rabid fanbase, they could literally write their own pricetag on how much they charge for their OS (they certainly have no qualms doing this on their hardware). I think Apple's always priced OS X that way as a 'thank you' to their users for their support, and the fact they really don't make much money off OS X since it comes with all new Macs anyways. Hardware manufacturers for Windows machines have to buy licenses for pre-installing Windows on their machines, so Microsoft is making money off them as well as the consumer, since the hardware manufacturer is marking up the hardware to account for their license costs for Windows.

I just bought up the Apple thing to answer Azatoths "It's so cheap because they know it's shit." comment.

Cheap upgrade doesn't necessarilly mean a sucky product (although Windows 8 may turn out to suck. Although I think its made a bit more sense since they unveiled Surface)

Its probably more a strategic decision to move as many people to Win 8 as they can; Win 8 is designed to run accross all devices, a risky trade off for their PC market that only makes sense if they really get critical mass, then use that critical mass to persuade PC owners to get windows phones and tablets. Hence, low upgrade price.

NB:

I used to think arguing about who had the best computer/OS/games system was pointless.

I now think arguing about the pros and cons of big tech companies is really important because they are shaping our future.

Its like arguing about sports teams - except that which company wins actually has a huge impact on the world : )

Fucking lol:

"Say goodbye to hunting for the app you need in the applications folder"

"Group apps in folders by dragging one app on top of another."

Ah but to be fair - launchpad is simply an option for displaying apps - you have to run it from the dock (or apps folder)

I find LaunchPad one of the most helpful features of Lion - I really don't have to hunt for apps, and I needn't bother pinning apps to the Dock anymore; just a gesture and I have all my apps on a screen ready to click.
