in 897 a dead pope was dug up and put on the throne so that he could be tried for perjury.

but the 1990's were still weirder cause look at this official site for space jam.

http://www2.warnerbros.com/spacejam/movie/jam.htm

if you look at the html for each page, there's all these little comments in the html, like <!-- Badda Bing, Badda Boom -->. collectively, the 90's are probably the weirdest decades.

the space jam website still being active is the best thing i have seen in all of the 21st century.

yeah because fuck punk music, right?

No, I didn't say that. But it was fucking strange in the 90s and early 00s. It was like the Reagan years redone, but now with far more commercialism and superficial fans than the 80s ever experienced. I'm not dissing the music or the intentions of the sincere participants.

what he was referring to cannot be called punk for real

And to some extent I'll agree with this, but I'm speaking more about the late 90's/early 00s. Punk was still going strong in the 90s...my uncle was part of the whole straight edge scene for years when he was in high school back in the 90s. And now I think there are more true DIY and non-compromising bands than ever. But 10 years ago, it was a complete mess...Hot Topic, the later years and current Warp Tour, etc...it was funny seeing all of that corporate influence fused with the big names of punk at the time, especially with shit like the Iraq War going on.

i know grown up punks. They still like punk

Same here. In fact if anything it's a better state now b/c the internet is such a great asset for underground scenes. That friend I mentioned is still doing his own thing and keeping a scene going in my hometown.

Can we just get on with this 90;s revival thing already, so we can move on to drill and bass and micromusic and everything else that happened in the early 00's/
That's what I've been thinking. The recent 80's revival makes me want to die.I was always grateful that I didn't grow up in the 80's. And then the late 2000's-present happened. Except we don't get a punk movement (or Reagan :D) I miss those minimal dance songs of 2001. They were so short-lived.

*Everything Joshua Said About Current "Punk" and Superficial 80's revival*

Completely agree with all of that. All of the "Punk" kids these days just seem like MTV followers. And I feel like people are doing an 80's revival because it's fashionable, not because they feel the music was necessarily any good.

Also, love your avatar. "A Bunch of Baby Ducks, Send them to the Moon" was stuck in my head yesterday.

In regards to Bush being the new Reagen (can't remember who posted that): At first I was going to disagree with you, because I felt that with Reagen's influence, all of America became a lot more conservative, but I realized that this also happened under George Dubya, probably because of the September 11th attacks. All of a sudden everyone was all "Mericka Fuck Yea" and the country got super ethnocentric and was all about revenge. So nevermind, I agree.

"Rock Against Bush" is so pathetic in comparison to "Let There Be Jelly Beans". Seems really forced, then again, I didn't grow up in the 80's so maybe it was forced then too

Edit: Hot Topic lol. I thought they were the shit back in 8th grade, and it honestly was kind of cool, they had some punk stuff that was legit.

Now they've got Fred's latest album and Miley Cyrus next to the Minor Threat and shirts that say "You're the Boss, Applesauce". Dunno wtf happened there.

There's still a punk scene, ala DIY loud thrashy music build on simple riffs with a lot of shouting. It just doesn't get signed to major labels, so you don't think it's going on as you never go to the nights and buy the CD from the hot chick on the door with the odd haircut.

I was in my 20s during the 90s but it's the period of my life I have the least sense of nostalgia for, the memories that I conjure up are generally crap in a dull sort of way. There are a few years I can't account for now, and I even lost interest in The Fall for a few of those. I rose like a phoenix in the 2000s in spite of my health taking something of a nosedive (and getting a damn sight less poon than I did in the 90s).

In regards to Hot Topic, I have to admit I bought one of my favorite tshirts there ages ago. But otherwise:

My uncle, the one who used to be a hardcore punk, finds them quite clever, because back in the 90s all the punks (at least the ones in Texas cities) used to go to mall just to ridicule everyone and loiter.

Now that vaporwave is cool maybe the people giving me shit in this thread can apologize???

And maybe Windows 95 could have won that year?????

Feel me

I really liked the 90's and being a lil kid and all that dope shit. Pretty trill.

I just saw a midnight showing of Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion. Times were simpler then and Mira Sorvino was niiice.

Futurism was still cool in the 90's. Now futurism is mistrusted and shrouded in paranoia and retrofetishism rules the scene.

  • 1 year later...

90s was badass, was probably the last decade we had before Americans and UK citizens were completely and utterly mentally fucked + less corporate control over the media (although in the 90s thats when it really went off the rails)
