My wife, who went to a huge high school, has seen one nerdy jewish kid become a star on this crappy NBC sitcom called "Outsourced"

I watched this for a few weeks before I got bored with it (I mainly watched it for the hot hazlewood lady). which character was he?

Actually the main guy, Ben Rappaport. For the most part we didn't watch it because it was too surreal and strange to watch him on tv, I don't even think the show was that bad really (not quite good though either). It was funny seeing her react to it, she has nothing against the guy at all, I think it's just funny to her seeing him of all people on a network sitcom. She actually went to middle school with him, including his bar mitzvah, but they went to different high schools (albeit in the same school district)

I've never noticed your name was Viia before. I'd always read it as Vila.

More like, didn't get invited to your parties, people from the past.

anytime someone is doing lots of cool shit and traveling the world I just assume they have rich parents and were mollycoddled through life..Not always true. but lots of times it is

yeah its kind of weird he did buy audio equipment worth $10.000 out of the blue. On the other hand who knows if he just used a credit or one of his parents died or whatever. Thats the strange thing with facebook. When you do not have actual physical contact to these people you will only know the glamour side all day long

It's pretty glamorous being rich, whether you're boring or not. "oh i think i'll go skiing in the alps on a whim this weekend" etc.

It seems odd some people being bitter about the concept of 'boring people'? "you only think they were boring because you didn't talk to them" - May be so but if someone strikes you as boring then I wouldn't waste time on them. And I think at school you generally have an idea about people you've never spoken to just by seeing them around, who they know etc.

I can think of a few examples of this but I think it is mostly facebook posturing (good word, just had to look it up to make sure I was using it right). A guy I used to hang out with a bit who was awkward but keen to impress (once pissed himself in class for a few quid after being talked into it, later developed some sort of agoraphobia and dropped out of school) has now turned super-7th Day Adventist and has a weird clan of happy clappy christian types who probably take the place of real friends. To be fair he seems to be having a good time but I'm convinced a lot of people use those new age christian groups as a social crutch.

And yeah a lot of the cool kids ended up with drug problems, fat, in prison, with kids.

id say i would come across as boring to most people, my social skills are limited to small talk, im also fairly comfortable just being silent in a crowd. i dont feel the need to start a conversation but if someone brings an interesting one too me then ill natter away the best i can, i just find it easier to write things down as i seem to have limited access to my brain when i communicate verbally, i also have limited attention span when talking with others, unless someone is saying something truly interesting ill zone the fuck out on them.

eh.

also i agree that the most forgettable people i attended school with are all doing really amazing things, one guy who was essentially a meathead is in the navy, he does nothing but post pictures of himself in a new country every week, skydiving, wake boarding, bungie jumping, trekking through the jungle, i never see him actually doing anything with the navy - the cunt is always on leave. yeah i be jealous ha

yeah this is what I am talking about. Reminds me of another friend of mine who has a pretty stressful /shitty job on a camping place in New Zealand. But as he posts pictures of the ocean 4 days a week you start to become jealous for no reason.

i quote this but you're not the first to mention kids as some sort of attribute to 'boring' here. do people having kids automatically become boring?

depends on the definition of boring i suppose...

  Quote
bor·ing (bôrng, br-)

adj.

Uninteresting and tiresome; dull.

boring·ly adv.

boring·ness n.

Synonyms: boring, monotonous, tedious, irksome, tiresome, humdrum

These adjectives refer to what is so uninteresting as to cause mental weariness. Boring implies feelings of listlessness and discontent: I had never read such a boring book.

What is monotonous bores because of lack of variety: "There is nothing so desperately monotonous as the sea" (James Russell Lowell).

Tedious suggests dull slowness or long-windedness: Traveling by plane avoids spending tedious days on the train.

Irksome describes what is demanding of time and effort and yet is dull and often unrewarding: "I know and feel what an irksome task the writing of long letters is" (Edmund Burke).

Something tiresome fatigues because it seems to be interminable or to be marked by unremitting sameness: "What a tiresome being is a man who is fond of talking" (Benjamin Jowett).

Humdrum refers to what is commonplace, trivial, or unexcitingly routine: My quiet cousin led a humdrum existence.

No not at all, I was sort of referring to how the people who lived recklessly when they were in school have ended up with the consequences that force them to do the opposite. The 'boring' people at school are doing the reverse to an extent. From my perspective, mates who have babies do get a bit boring I suppose, but we are early 20s and it's rough trying to have a family on the kind of pay you tend to be on at this age... I'd describe them as boring because they don't have time or money or energy to do anything other than play championship manager and fall asleep on the sofa. I quite like the sound of that though really.

cool i was just interested. if 'going out' is anything to go by... i definately go out less than i used to but then some people i know that go out all the time are still boring as hell (to me)... i'd say my life has become more interesting/exciting (to me) since my wee one arrived. maybe not to others but what do they matter eh. i know what you mean though, some people have to drop everything to bring up their kids, including hobbies, friends, travel, opportunities, etc. it's early days for me so we'll see.

Yeah you make an interesting point really, you couldn't possibly say it's boring raising your first child because it's pretty insane, and is 'going out' really that exciting? In the context of this thread having a bunch of photos of yourself backflipping off a stupa while doing a shot of sambuca up your arse or something is the definition of not boring but that's not to say I wouldn't rather have a conversation with someone who works at Paul Simon Curtain Superstore and stays in every night.
