The bass-playing Los Angeles native Stephen Bruner, who records as Thundercat, has had a truly varied career. He's done session and tour work for people like Snoop Dogg and Eric Benet, he's been a member of a boy band that scored a hit in Germany, and he's played with mookish hardcore legends Suicidal Tendencies. (Actually, he's still a member of Suicidal Tendencies.) Last year, Thundercat contributed to Cosmogramma, the spaced-out bass music masterwork from Flying Lotus. And on August 30, FlyLo's Brainfeeder label will release Thundercat's solo album The Golden Age of Apocalypse-- produced entirely by FlyLo.

Erykah Badu contributes to the album, as do members of SA-RA Creative Partners and J*Davey, pianist Austin Peralta, and Thundercat's drummer brother Ronald Bruner, Jr. One of the album's tracks, a cover of George Duke's "For Love I Come", recently ended up in our Best New Tracks section. Another, "Daylight", is above. We've got the album's tracklist below. And Thundercat also has a few shows coming up with FlyLo, so we've got those listed out as well.

The Golden Age of Apocalypse:

01 HooooooO

02 Daylight

03 Fleer Ultra

04 Is It Love?

05 For Love I Come

06 It Really Doesn't Matter to You

07 Jamboree

08 Boat Cruise

09 Seasons

10 Goldenboy

11 Walkin'

12 Mystery Machine (The Golden Age of Apocalypse)

13 Return to the Journey

I'm surprised there's no thread about this.

pitchfork and the like is oing to jizz all over this album. im sure its going to be good but this is far from anything new. i still am looking forward to it though.

He's lucky he knows FlyLo otherwise no one would give a shit... although it's nice music but music that normally doesn't get that much hype :spiteful:

Well, FlyLo is doing the right thing by giving this exposure, because it's SO FUCKING GOOD.

Brainfeeder is my favorite new thing in music. :braindance:

listened to this twice at work today.

it's a gooooood album. i had my doubts at first, but no way. fuck. this album is solid;

i did the same. i couldn't help but feel like i have already heard this before though. it doesn't sound fresh in the least to me. it sounds like a lot of the stuff i listened to when i was first exploring jazz many moons ago.

Holy shit this album is good. Yeah, harking back to the Herbie Hancock days or Sa-Ra of course more recently but this album is chock full of jams, and if you're going to pay homage to the greats this is a very fitting tribute. Will most likely be picking this one up!

Brainfeeder has really been on a fucking roll with solid releases this year... this looks to be no different.

On a related side note... I wonder, if they continue to release quality music like this and perhaps continue to expand the kind of music if Brainfeeder could slowly become the next label to be reckoned with in electronic in the same tiers as Warp, Planet Mu, and Ninja Tune perhaps?

I read in some interview that Flying Lotus said he wanted to take Brainfeeder in a jazzier direction, with more musicianship and live instrumentation along with the phat beats. Yes yes yes. This is how you do it.

Great album. For some reason this reminds me of 'Talking Book' era Stevie Wonder (at least the instrumentation) mixed with 70's era Herbie Hancock.
