You're supposed to use a made up name because your music occupies a universe of its own. When you create a fake name you are creating an identity to go with that music. That is why every track name, every release, all the visuals, every video, and all other things associated with your name need to be carefully thought out. You want your universe to be perfect, and in Aphex's universe it is full of inside jokes and mysteries. If he were just Richard D. James all the mystique around his music and identity would be gone. If you get tired of your name you can just make a new one and release music under that name. This is a stupid argument. I didn't even take the time to read most of these posts.

I also agree there is a litany of crappy names out there, but there always will be.
