Not so much instrumental but with vocals, kind of a gibberish language but lovely still, this wouldnt be dark ambient but more a melancholic ambient, I nominate this particular track by the Cocteau Twins from the 1986 album Vctorialand.

The track Metastatic Resonance on that album is one of the best and most relaxing sounds ever created.

Caretaker is fantastic, as well as Leyland Kirby.

Of is pretty excellent as well. The Buried Stream is a good starter album. I cannot find any youtube links though.

Some of Tetsu Inoue, Rapoon and Zoviet France's stuff is some of the most haunting and eery dark ambient i've heard

Check out this finnish ritual ambient group called Arktau Eos. Their live performances may seem excessive, but the music is superb.
