definitely seek out the deathprod box set, that is just killer. also try groupers new album(s) AIA, there may be some tracks on there that fit your bill. I find that album just intoxicating.

Not so much instrumental but with vocals, kind of a gibberish language but lovely still, this wouldnt be dark ambient but more a melancholic ambient, I nominate this particular track by the Cocteau Twins from the 1986 album Vctorialand.

I'll contribute with some "easy listening" dark ambient

Akira Yamaoka:

Silent Hill 2 soundtrack is his best, in my opinion. SH3 is less melodic but great monstrous atmosphere.

Akira Yamaoka is class. And some of the solo-stuff by Robert Rich is great as well.

That last one's not exactly dark but somewhat in the same vein like On Land.

edit: Echo of Small Things, that is. It's barely readable ...

Coil - Time Machines, ANS

Ektoise - Vovchanchyn, Tsaparang, The Great Perpendicular Path

Andrew Liles - The Dying Submariner

Lustmord - (The Place) Where the Black Stars Hang

John Watermann - Calcutta Gas Chamber

The track Metastatic Resonance on that album is one of the best and most relaxing sounds ever created.

Caretaker is fantastic, as well as Leyland Kirby.

Of is pretty excellent as well. The Buried Stream is a good starter album. I cannot find any youtube links though.

Thought I might mention this group...really really spooky stuff, limited release and appropriately mysterious backstory. Stumbled upon it during my black metal obsession a year or so ago.
