I used to play trumpet, played for about 8 years then got bored of it. Picked up drumkit and having been playing for the past 3 years maybe, on/off whenever i can get an actual kit to play with. Played guitar for about 3 years too.

These days I am very excited about piano! I have been practicing 2-3 hours a day (sometimes more) for the past couple months. Purchased an exercise book called "Mikrokosmos" by Bela Bartok, it's all music he wrote to teach his son piano. Very twisty and slippery finger workouts for me so far. But I am having a blast. I'm also trying to learn as much theory as I can too. Theory is so easy to learn on piano because you can see it and feel it right in front of you, definitely the big reason I love piano so far.

I've played a lot of instruments but never any one thing really well. I think I'm more into composition over performance, so programming music is more my thing.

i play guitar (i'm good, if i do say so myself), also bass, and i know my way around a piano but am by no means a virtuoso.

i've started using a steve vai book of picking exercises lately to improve my soloing speed on guitar. steve vai is a massive douche, but it's a good book.

Did you ever take any piano lessons? I've been wanting to learn the piano a lot lately, partly for the reason you mentioned where you can see everything mapped out in front of you on the keys. I also played the trumpet from age 9 to 18. I think high school/marching band is the wrong way to get kids inspired about playing music, and would have much rather learned jazz improvisation towards the beginning.

Yep we've got identical musical backgrounds lol. so when I tell you that I have never paid for a piano lesson, you can believe that like i'm your clone. I have only had about 5 piano lessons, all from a friend at school. If you are worrying that teaching yourself piano is difficult, do not be. It is fun. I highly recommend "Mikrokosmos". There are six volumes, ranging from easy to hard. I don't know how easy volume 1 is. I started on volume 2.

Going from trumpet to piano is like entering a whole new world. chords, man.

edit: oh and yes i totally agree with you, High School marching band is the number one reason I gave up on trumpet. I've found myself wishing I had stuck with it lately, but chords......

Computer :sup:

I also play a lot of actual instruments but I tend not to put them in my tracks (unedited, anyway) because my ability to stick to a metronome is roughly zero, and whenever I think about practicing I decide I'd rather just work on some tracks instead.

in order of learning

drums (was really good at one point, but I stopped for a long time for a couple years and my coordination isn't as good)

guitar/bass (same as drums, although I'm better at guitar than drums)

keys (not great at all though but I know where the right notes are if I were to want to play a simple lead on the fly)

computer

trombone.

i took piano lessons from when i was 4 until i was 12 and then quit. i can still sort of play but not near as well as i could 14 years ago. well enough to play wonky synth lines.

on the plus, i quit to learn guitar, which i have been playing ever since. i don't do shreddy stuff but i can play rather decently. or so people tell me! maybe they're just being nice i dunno.

then i picked up bass about 6 years ago. i don't currently HAVE a working bass but w/e.

i have a ukelele and i know how to play it but i don't know WHY

and every time i've had access to a drumset i've practised religiously. i can keep a decent 4/4 beat but nothing fancy in the least. think white stripes.

also a little trumpet, a miniscule amount of violin (enough to not screech) and various instruments i was forced to play in elementary school!

i can usually get the riffs i want on a keyboard after a couple tries. sometimes i program scales/notes i want, then play keyboard riffs with mpc pads. i can noodle around pleasantly all day on piano. i can manage at bass guitar. and then i suppose my main instrument is "the studio"

Guitar, bass, the computer mouse, drums, piano, saz, GLOCKENSPIEL!!! I played saxophone in grade 6/7 band, but I'm not sure I'd be competent with it now.

piano for a little over 10 years. i no longer take lessons but i play every day. i did though never take theory so it's something on my bucket list. i know if i could improvise and shit i'd be an unstoppable force

actually anyone have any material for learning theory ? maybe videos as i'm a visual learner.

I dunno how much they're represented in Canada but the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) have two books which basically explain everything quite succinctly from first principles. Called the "AB Guide to Music Theory". Probably on amazon.
