Counter-point:  Southern rap (esp. what came from Atlanta in the Freaknik-era) is vital music and should be heralded without the ridiculous region-based stereotypes. 

Another counter-point:  Metro Boomin' is the most interesting producer in hip hop right now. And has been for about 2 years...

I'm not sure how interesting Metro Boomin is. Why do you think that?

I like his specific take on the horror sound. The Without Warning album is one of the most consistent hip hop albums I've ever heard (which, imo is surprisingly rare). He managed to get people to appreciate 21 Savage's style/delivery, specifically on an album with Offset killing every verse he had.

I guess I was being a bit hyperbolic but out of the big name producers out right now, he's certainly my favorite. I personally think that him, Southside, TM88 and all the way back to Lex Luger have a very great ear for atmosphere in tracks. Metro to me is like an amalgamation of all their styles with more talent (save for Lex Luger, who's career trajectory is a tragedy).

edit:  And I'm specifically staying within the range of about the last 10 years or so. Going back further obv. the Memphis stuff is the origins.
