Are we taking about artists actively promoting Christianity in their music? If not then I propose:

Prince

Tom Waits (probably)

This right here

Son Lux's first album was pretty fantastic. The Christian community loves him because his music is actually good, and I like him because he never actually uses the words "God" or "Jesus" in his music, so I can just translate it as something else. The themes are all very general.

Plus he's on Anticon.

back when i was young enough to be a sheltered little bitch, that my parents tried to shuffle to church every sunday they also used to shelter my music... i owned both the first DC Talk and Jars of Clay cd's. DC Talk had some decent cuts, but that first Jars of Clay album is actually pretty sweet. hell they even used to play that "flood" song of theirs on the local rock and alternative stations in Minneapolis quite often... I haven't heard either in years and sold the discs long ago, but I'd have to give my vote to Jars of Clay

^ Haha haven't heard that song in like 20 years. I grew up on DC Talk and look where I am now. lol

DC Talk's forte was pulling from current music trends and pumping out polished productions that were similar but Christian themed. Kids who weren't allowed to listen to mainstream music growing up still felt like they were getting fresh, current music while our parents were listening to Amy Grant, Micheal W. Smith, and Carman.

I also really loved Petra back then (see video below). lmao so epic. And doesn't the lead singer (John Schlitt) remind you of David Carradine?

I have worked with all of the artists mentioned in the poll as well as many other CCM artists during most of the 90's while I was employed at a Nashville recording studio. Nashville is often called the "buckle of the bible belt" and CCM is the number two music style here after Country, followed by rock in 3rd place.

Anyway, although I'm not a fan of CCM in general I did find the artists that I worked with to be very talented and charming people. (Although the CCM music business is first and foremost a business, with most all of the shortcomings of the overall music business.)

Here are a few more CCM artists that I didn't seem mentioned in the thread:

Venus Hum - and electronic duo with a female vocalist/frontwoman - Annette sounds a little like Bjork.

Soul Sloshing

Keyboard controllers and laptops appear around 2:25

Sarah Jahn - she has a hint of Aretha Franklin in her voice, it can get deep and sultry.

Chronic

Yahweh Love

Charlie Peacock also needs to be mentioned, who in addition to creating his own music has also produced tons of CCM artists.

…and a few more off the top of my head:

Erin O'Donnell

Margaret Becker

Chagall Guevara

Phil Keaggy

Rikki Michelle
