Edit: sorry that sounded flippant - you can retrain as well. Or if it's possible, relocate. I do agree though that career jobs are hard to come by in the "developed" world at the moment.

The service sector panacea was a mirage. Those crappy, low pay, low condition jobs are quickly being automated or removed from existence (think retail's slow demise).

And then if no one has any money, there won't be any demand for pizza's or whatever the hell. And of the jobs left standing in the contracting market, there would be so much demand, that most people wouldn't stand a chance of getting into one.

We're strangling ourselves.

As for retraining, yeah i'm on it. Still have the current job so, it's all good.
