It's a kindle.

fancy e-reader, cheap tablet.. what's the difference.

lots of moms and dads and also younger folks will consider the Fire over a more expensive iPad as a christmas investment, especially those who regularly shop at Amazon.

this is the first non-Apple tablet that's not entirely idiotic.

It likely won't be a deep cut, but a cut nonetheless, and it will set the bar for other-than-iPad tablets in terms of price, features and content.

I don't care much for tablets but I think Amazon is in a great position to be a serious competitor. Like Joyrex said, they can lower the prices and profit from the synergy with their distribution services. I think they've done a great job on this. Great feature-set, some nice innovations and very cheap compared to an iPad.

However, their Silk web browser built into it seems to be the subject of some security and privacy concerns... Too bad too, since I was really hoping as a web designer, I'd have yet another browser/screen format to worry about supporting
