Microsoft and the "Metro" GUI

i had a problem with the windows phone os.

it looked cluttered and confusing, and animated icons just added to the visual chaos that was going on onscreen (plus alot of it just looks spammy and horrible).

seeing the same style system on desktop system looks just as cluttered and ugly, only this time with a lesser sense of focus. i have no idea why anyone would prefer this icon style system when using a keyboard and mouse on a desktop computer.

again, it's most disgusting piece of shit i have ever seen. ^-^

Until Microsoft pulls out their thumb and rewrite, from the ground up, their kernel and lose MS-DOS forever, they will never be able to top what Apple has done with OS X. The biggest problem with Microsoft is they don't strive to make the best product they can; they release something half-assed expecting the masses to gobble it up, and not keeping quality controls in place to ensure decent software and overall experience is maintained irregardless of platform.

actually, i think it's great for new smartphone users who don't want an iPhone. the large fonts and easy to navigate (relatively) gui make it great for someone like my gf who never had a touchscreen phone before. Android is an ununified mess, with a store that needs a top-down redesign (and malware filter).

Any word on whether windows 7 will get future versions of directx, or will we be forced to upgrade to windows 8??

If you buy a Windows 7 PC, it appears you'll get a chance to upgrade to Windows 8 for only 14.99. No word on what version of Windows 8 that might be, though.

My guess is that'll be the windows 8 before the first service pack which is needed to fill plot holes big enough to fix the Transformers movies.

I think once Ballmer retires or is ousted, Microsoft will stand a better chance of making a comeback. He was recently named worst CEO by Forbes, and under his leadership over the past 12 years, Microsoft has failed to innovate and move forward.

What they really need to do is go Apple's route and develop a new OS from the ground up, and make that the 'must have' OS for business and consumers alike. Eventually, stop support for Windows once enough people and corporations have migrated to the new OS.

hm dunno, apple took BSD apart,it wasn't all from scratch. MS could have learned how to make a multitasking OS from IBM, but they didn't (OS2 project), took them quite long until XP was just ok. They just don't have it, imho.

Ehm, the whole business model of Microsoft is built around legacy ware. Starting from scratch in the most extreme sense also means to throw all current customers out of the window(s). ;p

Not really when you're the market leader - Apple didn't abandon huge swaths of customers by switching to OS X, and Microsoft could do the same (probably easier) considering their still sizable market share. They've taken a small step in the direction with the emphasis on 64-bit, but they need to be more aggressive.

That's true - I mean from scratch in the sense that none of OS 9 made it's way over to OS X - it was a clean break (insert watmm joke here).

^Kind of innovative in my opinion, but it looks terrible. Since it appears to be optional I don't know why there were so many complaints.

Which can be said about this Windows 8 as well. As long as it is optional, and as long as it is 20 to upgrade from 7, I'll consider getting it.

Windows 9 will be revolutionary because it will return back to the good ol windows interface.

Lets make Win 8 shitty so we can make Win 9 look even cooler ;)
