fucking u2.

The fucking Edge is trying to fucking build some fucking gigantic hotel/golf resort over a little wildlife refuge sorta near me in Palos Verdes despite the fact that it's the only fucking non-overdeveloped bit of coastline for the next hundred sommat miles, but he probably wants me to donate to PETA, fuck that guy in his fucking face with a fucking echoplex.

  Quote
The combination of melody and lyrics in "Happy Birthday to You" first appeared in print in 1912, and probably existed even earlier. None of these early appearances included credits or copyright notices. The Summy Company registered for copyright in 1935, crediting authors Preston Ware Orem and Mrs. R.R. Forman. In 1990, Warner Chappell purchased the company owning the copyright for $15 million, with the value of "Happy Birthday" estimated at $5 million. Based on the 1935 copyright registration, Warner claims that the United States copyright will not expire until 2030, and that unauthorized public performances of the song are technically illegal unless royalties are paid to it.

Actually you could probably just say the 1% in music is the execs. The whole analogy holds true when you consider the producers/engineers/musicians the actual workers and the corporate people the erstwhile bankers. They even fuck up in similarly absurd ways (INTERNET? WHATS THAT AND WHY WOULD WE USE IT FOR MARKETING?!?! DURR!)

Joking aside I agree with this. I think there are very few artists/entertainers who strive for absolute mega-success and achieve it from the very start (though I think Kanye West did, which IMO explains his self-created drama), it's a lottery of who is considered "marketable" and thus shaped by the industry moguls. Many of them become egocentric assholes after they become huge stars. Lady Gaga could of been of many annoying hipster chick making crap electro-songs in NYC when she was signed. That Foster The People band could of been one of hundreds of poppy LA bands looking to score a hit single. Less and less artists seem to be picked up and hyped so much, and likewise bands don't lose out by not charting another singe, they lose out by not adopting whatever the majors want them to do for the upcoming quarter in sales.

The Big Labels are essentially dying, but that's irrelevant. They have shows like Glee, American Idol, Idol this, Next voice-or-some-horseshit, circle jerk Awards shows, bumber music for Jersey Show and The Hills, promotion on E Network or Perez Hilton, ringtones (that's the only manner Soulja Boy went platinum right?), VEVO ads for video formula, etc. That's how they get Top40 listeners to download mp3s on their computers and smartphones.

But I digress. The 1%, on paper, is probably all of the sad pathetic old songwriters and producers who have spent more time buying up catalogs and renewing copyrights so they license a Motown hit for family comedy trailers and reissue albums with the latest unnecessary digital format on some arbitrary anniversary. That still makes millions. The "Lion Sleeps Tonight" is easily one of the most heinous examples.

I really want to say Kanye West but he's gay, which cancels the asshole part, and I refuse to read more about him to give an informed challop.
