Just kidding, every music forum I visit these days has a thread like this, and I felt WATMM was left out. I'm assuming its either cuz we all collectively hate dubstep/skrillex or because we in general are able to figure out techniques like this on our own.

I never understood the whole "help me sound like this guy" type threads. Sure there are specific sounds that are worth understanding, but wanting to sound exactly like another artist is something I'm never fully understood.

Its actually amazing, I don't think we've had a "help me program drums like squarepusher" thread in a while, did everyone get renoise and figure it out already?

Either that or maybe this forum is so dead because people are scared to ask questions.

We want you EKTers to know that we are there for you on both an emotional and physical level. Seriously, you need us, just say the words, we'll be over to please you in a way we can. We are your collective beacon.

You have to get a gay haircut first.

Is there any VST that will cut my hair? Often I find that when I'm sitting at my DAW, reaching over to call the barbershop, and arriving, getting my haircut, paying, returning home is just too much work. It would be nice if I could have something to automate this process, but as far as I can tell there is no applescript I can code up to do this.

An AU would work as well, but I kinda need the midi outs from the VSTi so I can route CC data to the hair clippers.

Speaking of which, what is a healthy amount your clippers can clip before you run into hair follicle distortion?

Haha, yeah I've seen these as well. It's not just "I want to sound like this artist" it's "I want to sound like this really terrible hyped artist that already has a plethora of shitty imitators."

Analog all the way on this one. You can't get a good digital saw comb filter.

you need a penguin, a bandsaw and an old dusty book.

I am assuming the bandsaw is used to cut the old dusty book. I am not sure how much dust is required. If I can't obtain a dusty book, shall I take a non dusty one, and apply an fx chain of dirty saw dust on it from my sawtooth oscillators? What is the penguin for? Do i have to modulate the Waddling to a Wobbling?

How old is teh Skrillex? He dresses like a 16 year-old but if you actually look at him he could be in his forties.

Edit: just googled. He is 23!

I'm actually not even entirely sure he's male. Skrillex should consider growing a beard and then shaving one side of it off around the cheek and side chin area.

This requires knowledge of BASIC right? I'm assuming the BAS part obviously contributes to the lower end spectrum of the sound. But what about the IC? Is the IC the part that provides that sick "ick" like character to the bass sounds that makes it so filthy?

I think the best way to make skrillex type bass sounds is to download the industrial strength massive patch packs, load up massive, select a patch and slap your bell end against the keyboard.

Drums is slightly trickier, you need to download the industrial strength drum sample packs, load them into a sampler and then loop them.

what I'd like to know is how to sound like Christopher Walken, his voice is amazing but I haven't managed to find a massive patch pack for it yet :(

1) Line of coke

2) Two shots of cheap tequila

3) Sit on a dick and wobble

Here you go. Don't forget to buy really really bad cocaine which makes you annoyed and angry instead of awake and concentrated. That's all I can add. You should come up with the perfect wobble Skillrex bass we all adore so much :emb:

But of course it will never be so genius as Skillrex' bass. He is just a mastermind. We will never touch him, as we probably will never touch Afx :emotawesomepm9:

Check my dusty tunes and mixes over here: https://soundcloud.com/2kn

Synths: Formant filters, power drills, sheet metal, bansaws, cats being bathed, heavy grit sandpaper.

Drums: butt metal drumming meets electro... i mean seriously, who the hell uses metal style double bass in electronic music?... Well

Samples: feild recordings of kids in your van...

Live performance: play tracks in live, occasionally turn your send knobs to trigger a beat repeat or looper, smoke cigs, dump songs midway thru, fall alot, and blame things on power failures... oh and sing.

Aaaaand you are now skrillex.

I don't know how many times I've been looking over someone's shoulder and say something like "wow that's a nice patch, how'd you build it?" and then have them be like "oh ya it's this massive patch I found", then they proceed to hold one finger down on the KB and the main melody of the tunes plays...

Then I'm like "oh".

I don't know why everyone is hating on this guy. His made a good success of himself. Dubstep has many forms. I think that's where the misunderstanding is these days is that people listen to Skrillex and they think that's dubstep which is just silly. Personally I find the dungeon sound that a lot of producers are doing to be a little dull but it really depends what you're feeling.

I think people hate out of a mix of confusion, jealousy and the fact that the music he creates holds little to no weight emotionally to most people. He is talented if it is truly just him producing his music, but if you've ever heard the dudes solo stuff before this, it gets harder to believe he even did that considering his label-mates sound(s) and the fact that one member of 12th planet is practically attached to the hip with him.

This argument has been mentioned before, and it will keep getting mentioned as music evolves in the future, but to me skrillex compared to my opinion of worthwhile music in his genre of general 'dubstep' is like comparing soulja boi to KRS-1 or Mos Def... 10 years from now, I will still pop on mos def... but if I even listened to soulja boi with my guard down (DRUNK) then I might dance, but put it on 10 years from now and it will most likely just make me laugh. Skrillex is a gimmick and a marketing tool to bring about a new wave of this style of sound IMO, whether or not you consider it a good thing is opinion, I just ignore this shit music... plus the dude is ugly. :emotawesomepm9:

You really must be a total ignorant sound production wise to simply call the sound on Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites "just playing around with Massive on 5 minutes". There is a reason why there is a million people trying to get that sound posting Youtube tutorials and no one got there. I don't care how this guy made a "more or less, similar" sound. The bass-thing on SMANS is extremely complex, sounds huge, and the modulations are amazing. It certainly doesn't sound like Massive and more like modular synthesis processed with who knows what. This is why if anyone on here tried to replicate that sound for educational purposes would misserably fail and realize it's not as easy.

:cisfor: Have you seen the fuckton of massive patches geared towards his sound that sound EXACTLY like him? If he truely is the only one working on his music, then I have said it before and will say it again, he is a talented dude and is really trying to make dubstep the next wave of Nu-Metal, so good for him...

MAy not take 5 minutes, but anyone who's geared to make fwudstep and puts their heads to it can achieve his sounds in massive by either tweaking free online presets or reverse engineering from ones that are already made and making your own... just ask the ocean of bro-step producers that did it before and after he released that album lol. The hundreds of randos with WAREZ programs trying to show you how to make his shit on ableton with a million formants, phasers and operator will fail, because they don't know the tools he uses. Again, not saying its easy, but out of the bro-steppers, he isn't even the one with the coolest sound IMO.
