Not For Threes

Recommended Posts

I listened to Not For Threes a couple days back and it never grabbed my attention so I turned it off halfway through; something I haven't done for years. It didn't sound BAD but just incredibly BLAND. When I listen to IDM I expect a specific kind of complexity that will become more and more exposed through multiple listens but this just sounded really shallow. If I didn't know any better, I'd of thought this was created by some amateur artist on Fruity Loops.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone but seriously, Why do you consider this good music? Did I listen to one of their worst albums? Where should I go with Plaid?

Describing why someone likes a piece of music is difficult, you should just give it another shot, or not, or try some other Plaid album! Check out Spokes, or Greedy Baby.

Don't confuse the complexity of something with how complicated it is, though. Music can be very busy and still very shallow, or very simple and still very profound!

hello danny, may i ask how old you are in years?

i know that some of NF3's was done with Dr. T's KCS software, which is what (the real) Black Dog used pretty much from the start? so i hear.

they used to use an Amiga personal computer.

and i'm sure i remember thee Wizard Ken Downie himself once saying that there was nothing wrong with fruity loops. . .

but not that that means anything.

good day. xxxx :)

ps. what sorts of music or albums do you consider to be good music? just out of interest.

i can understand why some younger people might not think it's that great if they're listening to it for the first time now, but when it came out in 97 it was considered to be pretty damn good! read: 'hot shit!'. and it's still 1 of my favourite electronic albums. :)

for me it's the melodies, the odd quirky interesting sounds, the arrangements, the drum patterns, Bjork/Nicolette/Mara's vocals,... how anyone could say Abla Eedio, or Lilith, or anything from NF3's really!, sounds like it was done by an amateur on fruityloops? i do not know!!

fruityloops wasn't even made available (in its most basic and infantile version) for sale and on the net until 98, anyway, and you couldn't do much with it at all.

anyway, i call...

yeah the condescending tone is just a joke, purposely, on my part anyway. i originally thought this was just some dumb attempt at a trolling thread after seeing this :

XBOX360:Brothers Dogma

maybe it still is. so i spoke in turn, if that's the right turn of phrase/expression to use.

but yeah, anyway, if you are serious and don't understand it and are struggling to like it, just listen to it again. it didn't immediately click with me, either. but it became 1 of my favourite albums.

i remember listening to it on E once and just adoring every single part/sound/aspect of it. it was fucking lovely, but powerful and harsh in places, then lovely again, and dark. it's a fucking epic of an album and i still love it to this day. :)

Why should age matter when determining taste?

ftr, i've said above why i personally had asked how old you are. music, especially electronic music, is very different now to what it was in the late 90's. - techniques, styles, technology, etc.

Plaid wrote NF3's around 96 and it came out in 97. they were about 26, and had just got back from touring with Bjork. and i think it's pretty damn good! but not solely for those reasons, or for any one of those reasons in particular. but i do think you tend to appreciate and love things more and realise what's really important and what's really good as you get older anyway. - one of the reasons why i have absolutely no problem with listening to music and revisiting/remembering/cherishing things from the past. :)

Alright, this is a reasonable answer. I guess, i'll just put this album away for a while and revisit it later on.

I only very recently listened to Not For Threes, and aside from being a bit over long and a little bit samey, I thought it was pretty fantastic!!!

I think saying there isn't depth in it is a little bit... well... arrogant... but at the same time, I can see why some wouldn't like it.

The only other Plaid I have is Rest Proof Clockwork which is an entirely different beast altogether. It used to be one of my favourite albums for several years although I don't listen to it as much any more.

samey? bland? no depth? wtf. lol. just what record are you guys listening to?

i'd say that something like Tri Repetae, or those DJ Shadow or UNKLE albums you've listed as albums you like, are way more "samey" and "bland" than NF3's is.

but i don't know that, if you don't like it now, 14 years after its release, you ever will. but nevermind, there's plenty of other great/amazing/outstanding/awesome/brilliant/wicked/beautiful Plaid releases to listen to that you might like more than NF3's. :)

Jesus, I hadn't realised the album was that old. Sounds newer
