Chaos for the Internet

Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system."

HOw the fuck would this affect DNS? Just cause a site gets brought down and the DNS record points nowhere?

Because it breaks DNSSEC. Communication between DNS servers would become insecure which would make it much much easier to create large-scale man-in-the-middle attacks.

DNSSEC isn't even widely deployed yet. Communication between DNS servers wouldn't "become insecure", it already is. This bill would have nothing to do with it.

oh my bad, i just read up on it. it was deployed at the DNS root last year. still, this whitepaper im reading on how IP PROTECT and DNSSEC are incompatible doesn't make much sense, can't you just have the sites that offending requests are redirected to, part of the DNSSEC framework? Of course it would break if the servers that users are redirected to cant be verified. So just add them to the trust chain. What's the big deal?

Here's the response i got from my senator

  Sentaor Gillibrand said:
I am a cosponsor of this legislation because I believe that we must protect American intellectual property against foreign websites that infringe upon our rights. By empowering the Attorney General of the United States to go after foreign infringing websites, this legislation becomes a necessary tool to ensure that U.S. companies remain competitive in the world marketplace. I recognize that there are technical concerns with the enforcement of this bill that need to be addressed. I am committed to working with my colleagues in the United States Senate to ensure that this legislation protects the Constitutional rights of Americans and does not stifle lawful free speech or innovation on the internet.

Empowering the Attorney General as such is unwise. The American people should be the judge of the legitimacy of their information. Many Americans know that our politicians are strongly influenced by campaign donations and lobbyists, and it is obvious that these parties have a desire to guide American consumer tastes in all fields (cars, food, philosophy, lifestyle, gender roles, sports, news, music, etc).

While the Attorney General is not a politician, consolidating the power to choose what websites work and what websites don't should not be up to one person or entity. The public will assess the legitimacy of the information they receive and as our society grows to accept the reality of the internet, we will become much more rational in our ability to dissect and evaluate information.

This is not a time to put up more barriers and block information, Senator, this is a time that Americans are informing themselves. The United States Government cannot act as a censor, and will only serve to punish the public and will have little effect on real anti-American activity. Please do not continue to promote this consolidation of power within an already inefficient and corrupt government. If you have read this far, thank you, I look forward to a response.
